67:06 Win In The Wind | RunThrough Middlesbrough Half Marathon | 15:06 5K & 30:48 10K Mid-Race Split

Catch up on the action about my win at the RunThrough Middlesbrough Half Marathon in a blustery 67:06, just 11 seconds shy of my prediction! It’s been nearly a decade to the day since my last competitive half at the 2016 World Half Championships, and this race was an epic return now I’m 40 years old.

From the drive to the start line, through the warm-up, the full race breakdown, and post-race insights on splits, battling the wind on my own, and my race tactics. Plus, hitting a scorching 15:06 5K and 30:48 10K mid-race… both my season’s bests, beating my Newcastle 10k time from January!

If you’re into running stories that get real about the grind and glory, this one’s for you. Like, subscribe, and comment your own windy race tales!

Huge thanks to RunThrough for a fantastic event and to Start Fitness of Newcastle for supplying me with my race day kit to match my Puma Fast-R3’s.

  1. Brilliant Ryan! Really on course for something special at London if conditions are good! Question – you mentioned your hammy at the end… thats how I feel after a half in the Fast-R's… to be fair my last half in them I was fine (I do think I am getting used to them) but I fear the marathon distance in them… will you use these or go with the DNE4?

  2. Congrats Ryan, great to see you leading the race right out front and keeping the hammer down solo. Seem well on track for the marathon goals and I think you probably covered the HM distance is well under your prediction because everyone I spoke to said it was over by 200m+ (all different types of watch + no clusters of tall building to really mess with the GPS either), which would be a shame and hopefully is double check fixed for next year.

  3. Mega stuff! Glad RunThrough seemingly did a better job of organising your race, North Lincs Half was an absolute shambles 😬

  4. Really interesting stuff on the warm-up and race efforts. A full warm-up video, stretches, drills, efforts would be great! Especially for us, getting older, runners. Wel done on the win, great time!

  5. You're amazing Ryan, the biggest come back! One of my clubmates Zoe is part of Puma 3 too, also a record holder. Keep going you are so bloody quick. Shared to my club page Elmbridge Road Runners

  6. Absolute athlete 😮‍💨💪 congrats on the great run man! 👏 3:15/km slow into the wind 😂 I cannot fathom that! It's like my mile PB pace 😅

  7. Great run, you must be very encouraged. I commented previously (my various heart issues). It gives me some confidence to do as you have done. I too have not run a competitive race for 20 years – a few very uncompetitive Park Runs ! As someone who has similar historic pb's to you, coming back to racing, how did you find the shoes now compared to back in the day ?
