Marathon training doesn’t stop for the weather. This week’s threshold session: 5K at 164-168 bpm, 3x4min VO2max reps, then another 5K threshold at the same heart rate to compare the times – all in 18mph winds and sub zero wind chill!
First proper run in my new Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3s. Threshold splits came in way faster than expected. Full session breakdown, how it felt, and whether the shoes delivered.

Hi Ryan, really enjoying the videos all the way from Australia. Looks like some tough conditions to be pushing through, great to see the mental determination to get through the workouts. I am training for my first marathon in October and whilst I am not even close to your pace, your videos are keeping me motivated. I will have to remind myself of these conditions later this year when we go into winter! Cheers, Nick
I feel you with the wind and rain! Was lucky to have really decent weather on Sunday for a 36k steady run, but this week has been awful. Would take the 36k again any day over the shorter runs in to the headwinds and rain. I love the double 10k story haha. Incredible running, that must have been a really good feeling after!
What is your recovery routine after each run? Also, what HR on your easy runs? I’m having persistent problems with my calves, shins. Putting the brakes on any consistency…frustrating!
