The not extending but trading is interesting. Only a $2.25 million salary increase. VV is a free agent in 2 years.
Not crazy imo. Is one year of Hellebuyck better than VV for 2 years? You just have Akira slide in as starter next season or convince Hellebuyck to take a short deal.

Every player’s agent publicly leaks that they want to get their client $X in AAV. It’s all part of the game. Sure Hellybuck can try to squeeze max $’s if he becomes a UFA. We’re on the verge of having our top six locked up for the forseeable future. Even we roll the dice and only have him for a year for him to decide if he wants to chase $$$ or wants to be in the mix to win it all for the next 5-6 years on this team. The guy is perennially in the Vezina mix and all the other pieces are in place in NJ besides the franchise goalie. Now is the time to strike. Just because Schmid had a magical series vs the Rangers doesn’t mean he’s ready and as much as I love what VV did last year I’m not sold that what we saw isn’t the best we’re ever gonna get from him. Helly is an all-star. We’d have to be nuts not to try to get him if we could.

Hellebuyck is so tempting but so risky.
Having him would make us instant Cup contenders, but his next contract is going to be way more than anyone should be comfortable giving to a 30 year old goalie. It would put us into an uncomfortable cap situation, especially if we want to keep Luke and Nemec long term.
I suppose the major cap increase next year would make it less risky. But he’s gonna want at least $10 million. That’s nuts for a goalie who probably has 3-5 good seasons left in him.
