Looking at The Timo Meier Trade From The San Jose Sharks' Perspective (Ft. Corey Masisak)

In the previous episode, many opinions were shared regarding the Timo Meier trade…including from Meier himself. However, I was curious as to how the San Jose Sharks settled on the New Jersey Devils’ trade offer. So, I asked Sharks writer Corey Masisak (The Athletic) to join me on today’s episode to help provide a different perspective from San Jose’s point of view. Corey used to cover the Devils for The Athletic as well.

  1. San Jose fans are going to look back a few years from now and realize how great of a trade this was for their organization. No one is talking about Ohotiuk (sp?) but he is going to be a dominate force in the league for a long time. He also doesn’t get enough credit for his speed and hockey IQ. Shark’s Fans, believe me when I tell you he is going to be solid. Plus, Zetterlund will be a bottom 6 consistent playoff performer once the organization gets there and will be one of those invaluable assets. I’ve watched these kids develop for a long time and it only gets better from here, and they already don’t get enough credit. You will see them on the ice and be like, “oh wow that guy was right!”

  2. That was a fantastic trade by Fitz that really did not trade anyone of great value for Meier. The draft picks are valuable but if you don’t draft we’ll, they mean nothing. This is what happens when you have a GM that has no GM experience, he went from low level coach to GM skipping a bunch of positions. Fitz just showed you how an experienced GM takes advantage of a rookie GM.

  3. I think Timo desperately wanted to go to New Jersey. So he told every other team that he won't sign a long term contract. Timo held all the power.

  4. I'm willing to bet Grier valued Zetterlund > Holtz. If you're Fitz why would you value a sub par skater whose value is sinking vs NHL roster player showing strong Bot-6 performance now. PLUS Zett is on RFA expiring contract with a bridge deal on the horizon which usually equals some cap value. I think we'll look back and find this to be a quite fair swap.

  5. I thought that the Conditional First Round pick was dependent on the Devils making the Conference Finals IN EITHER YEAR… not BOTH.
Can someone confirm what the status is?

ALSO: THANK YOU, TREY!!! Wonderful video… and THANK YOU COREY! Great stuff… lots of information to sift through! Best to both clubs and I hope it works out for my team (Sharks) AND the Devils!

  6. Anyone who thought that Hughes, Nemec, or Mercer wasn't going to be untouchable, wasn't paying attention. Mukhamadullin? Absolutely. Holtz? Certainly a possibility. Casey? Sure. Rango? Yup.

Luke is likely a future star, plus his brother would have been crushed if he was traded. Nemec? The Devils needed a quality right-handed d-man in their system, and Nemec being a two-way guy is an added bonus.

As for Mercer, at the beginning of the season I though he could have been a trade piece for sure. Yet as his Sophomore season went on, he has shown himself to be an invaluable dual-threat player with tenacity, and an burgeoning defensive game. By the time the trade deadline approached, Mercenary went front tradeable, to untouchable. He is going to be a fan favorite for years.
