Toronto Maple Leafs look to overcome defensive issues in weekend back-to-back ft. David Alter

It has been a rough week for the Toronto Maple Leafs and to get more insight into the temperature around the team, reporter David Alter joins Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti. They go over how the last few days have gone including the fallout from loss to the Ottawa Senators. Mike and Dave ask Alter about Sheldon Keefe’s challenge to get John Klingberg to play defence at a respectable level and what options are available for the team to consider. They talk about the Matt Dumba rumours involving the Leafs from the off-season and what the void Toronto was trying to fill with Klingberg. Alter also gives his thoughts on the Leafs going through adversity and why it’s something the Leafs should be embracing. They end the show previewing the upcoming back-to-back with the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks and looking at the goaltending tandem Keefe is rolling out.

  1. Put him on waivers, send him down, fix him in the Marlins. Part of the reason we lost Lafferty was this contract, the other part was the 9 games of Minten. Look at Lafferty now. David Alter is a great guest!

  2. Klingberg is only part of the problem, theres too many holes on this team.
Last week it was " lack of response "
    Week before it was
    "Need more scoring bottom 6"
    Few years back it was
    "No killer instinct "
Who are we kidding this team is nowhere near contending.
Be thankful that the team make playoffs .
Team is assembled with patchwork and cast-off's.
    That's the DNA

  3. Keefe should put Klingberg on the 4th line and sit Reaves. 11-7 would be a disaster because this team doesn't play good with that set up.

  4. Klingberg is unfixable everyone around the league has the book on him great puck mover and looks great when he is contributing offensively but when he isn't producing much you will then more often then not see the flaws in his game especially in his own end as a defenseman and he is amongst the worst defensemen in the nhl in his own end. When the Leafs decided to sign him they completely ignored the flaws in his game and just knew he was a name around the league and because he was swedish and the leafs didn't go out also in free agency or make a trade for a excellent defensive defensemen, that is how you actually protect Klingberg, it should be on the upper management for not doing their homework more and realizing none of the defensemen they currently have would be a good enough partner to pair with Klingberg. Leafs can't fix him, he is what he is and the leafs fell for the bait on him, now everyone is going to make him the new Gardiner/Barrie/Holl and gives the leafs season another scapegoat if they don't have a long playoff run this year, however like I said we should be holding the management accountable for these decisions but we won't and we'll just blame the player all season

  5. 3-2 regulation loss to the San Jose Sharks. I see the Leafs' season, playoff-qualification-wise, as still salvageable unlike that of an Oilers' squad that couldn't hours ago beat the worst team in the NHL.

  6. For 30 yrs. now , Toronto has ran through great Players trying to Make the Stars the Company has Ran with Look Good.
    Stop doing that Losing Plan
The Team Matters more than the Star
Plus , WHY do You Play Everybody in the Wrong Position and Wrong Stick Side?

  7. Klingberg is a D- Defensemen
Just watch His Plays in His Position
He Fails at Most of the Decisions You should be making on each Shift.
You have to Watch every Shift .
He Fails at Using the Boards Correctly
    Shooting from the Point
Putting the Puck in the Crease
Bad Passing in His Own End
Doesn't go after the Puck in His Own End
    Bad Changes

  8. Klingberg and Reavo was a waste of money and space on the team.
Klingberg is dropping down to 7th D and will continue to drop down Sam Benoit and Lagesson look better than him

  9. I know everyone saying Sammy and Woll haven't been great but they both been laid out to dry for 12 games. Everyone saying bring up Jones who's in the AHL he isn't looking very good there either in my mind any good goalie could be in net and with our d we lose plan and simple

  10. Klingberg and a pick to any team but ours reavo on waivers or buy him out Domi coming around and if Bert falls off get his dumb 5mill out lost Sam Lafferty for this 💩

  11. if Toronto drops the next two games bye bye keefe but my question is who next because I don't any of the three coaches will fix it

  12. Great show. Have David back again soon. Package klingberg plus others to calgary for tanev and zadorov

  13. The Rangers have a solid D core to support a player like Gustafsson. The Leafs don't. He would be a tire fire here as well.

No one stepped up for Liljegren but when did Liljegren ever step up for a teammate. That is gonna change? I will believe it when I see Nylander skate into a scrum and grab onto someone.

Keefe has endlessly rewarded guys for not fulfilling their defensive roles. He is now upset players aren't fulfilling their roles. Why would they?

I thought it was Brodie that blocked the deal to send Kadri to Calgary.

The guy the Leafs still should move on from is Nylander. Move him now before he starts his mid-season vacation. Let us not forget he was the Leafs worst forward last year in the playoffs and who can forget this playoff play the year before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE03ynwGs7s That is where they get what they need to fix the defense.

If Keefe can't make the players work perhaps it is time to fire Keefe.
