  2. "Some additional info from the article"
    – We are having a great time in Calgary. So it was a very difficult decision and we thought about it for a long time. Then there are no closed doors to extend later, but last season was tough. A lot has happened in the last year. Then I feel that I want to wait and see, says Mikael Backlund to VLT.

He does not rule out that Calgary could trade him before the contract expires.

    – I'm ready to come back and play the season and if it goes great I might want to extend after the season. If it doesn't go well, we'll see what happens, he says.

  3. Maybe it’s just a huge coincidence , but it’s strange that the Flames announce the retirement of Kiprusoff’s number on the same day this news comes out about Backlund. Can’t help but wonder if the team is sending a message that his number might have been retired if he played his entire career here , but it’s not going to be now. And don’t think that wouldn’t be a tough pill to swallow for Backlund. He’s been a big part of the community , and it would have been a huge honour for his name to hang in the rafters next to some other greats.

  4. This is my local newspaper and I've read this whole article.
Backlund says that calgary showed interest to start working on an extension now which is what he then declined. However, he's open to re-sign next summer if this season goes well for him and the team.
