Nashville Predators Trade Ryan Johansen to the Colorado Avalanche

On Saturday, incoming GM Barry Trotz announced that the Nashville Predators traded Ryan Johansen to the Colorado Avalanche. On today’s Locked On Predators, we break down the trade deal and its impact on the Predators moving forward. We debate whether Nashville would have bought out Johansen if a suitable trade partner hadn’t been found. We share our thoughts on the Preds retaining salary in the deal and how Alex Galchenyuk may or may not fit into Nashville’s future plans. We discuss how Johansen might fit in well with the Avs and how the Predators will fill a Joey size hole in the roster. Finally, we take our best guesses as to what Barry Trotz will do with the extra cap space. Could there be another big move in the works?

  1. Love Ryjo, hated to see him go but it’s obvious that short term his spot will be taken by younger players and the cap savings getting his contract off the books will provide will put us up to $19.5 mil which is significant. Theoretically, I could see Trotz swing to get up into the Top 10 of the draft (specifically in the 5 to 7 range which is occupied by the Habs, Coyotes, and Philly). I could see a package of 15, 24, and a young prospect but for whom? Michcov would be intriguing but the rumor is the Caps want him at #8. The free agent market to me is not where you make hay in trying to improve the Preds as much as I like a guy like Debrincat. He’s a guy that should go to a team that’s like a piece or two away. Michcov you hear weird media reporting on his motivations and taking meetings with only a select few teams. It would be nice to move up but I only see it happening if Trotz knows the guy or guys he wants. I still say that if we are parsing words between retool and rebuild this is a club that needs some dynamic forward talent at center or wing and there are a lot of intriguing possibilities even if we stay at #15 but we’ll see what Trotz-y does? If we jumped in front of the Caps and snatched Michcov that would be the definition of swinging from your heels in my view (someone could definitely take the plunge and pick him higher which would be the mouth dropper of the 2023 draft). Plus with the political climate and the fact that he may or may not come to the states—very risky to invest in a guy that you have no way of monitoring but we have Russians on the team like Askarov so maybe the coaching staff is fine with it? It’d be high stakes river boat gambling with Michcov. Does Trotz absorb a bad contract from someone in the Top 10 to get a higher pick? We need an injection of speed, puck talent, and a play driver on the ice and that can be anyone as far a wing or center man. Brunette needs some pace setters and I would say more than one..and I wouldn’t even rule out a defenseman but forward first. It will be intriguing.
