  1. Oh, this is good for two reasons: it is not destroying our cap and it is a sign for other players to believe in the team.

  2. I am shocked, but scared. I personally would never give out 7 year contract but I work in a bowling alley so what do I know about running a Hockey Team?

  3. To soon to tell. This might be a steal if he can keep it up. But if it goes south it's going to make the O'Reilly trade look even worse. The one positive I see is with him and Skinner chemistry if they can keep it going that line is going to be on fire.

  4. I love this signing. I don’t think that last year was a fluke. He’s shown that he can score goals, has a rocket for a shot, is fantastic with puck possession due to his size and long reach, can carry the puck through the neutral zone, is an excellent penalty killer and supposedly is a great locker room presence. He’s shown that he can be a #1 center, which I don’t see any of our other talented forwards being able to do. If Eichel gets 10 million a year, Skinner gets 9 and Nick Suzuki is getting close to 8, Thompson at 7 million may actually turn out to be a bargain.

  5. Wow way more than I was hoping. One good year from Tage, I was hoping for Tuch type money. Does this open the door for our guys to be expecting more? (Dahlin, Cozens) 5.5 million would have been MAX for me.

  6. I think TT has emerged as a leader on the team now. Maybe not as a captain quite yet, but you can plainly see his confidence is off the charts and, IMO, he's going to pick it right back up where he left it last year. This boy is hungry!

  7. Tage has sent a clear message to our Sabres franchise and the league.
This contract clearly states he wants to win in Buffalo with the young core in place. This deal will lead to Okposo signing a team friendly contract.
This contract has solidified our positive future hands down.

  8. Love it for two reasons:

    1. The Sabres and Granato can try new things with the kids coming up and with Thompson already signed he won’t feel slighted. Im not saying he’s that kind of guy but if for instance Quinn is being put in that top PP and taking TT Reps, the thought can creep into his mind that they are holding him back from big $. It’s called negotiating in good faith. GMKA 👍🏼 nailed it.

    2. If he does go blow up they aren’t looking at 9-10m aav

  9. I like it. This contract shows the prospects that hard work pays off and Adams will reward successful players. Let’s Go!

  10. Love it. These are the kind of contracts that help win championships. It's always a gamble at this stage of a player's career but I'm quite comfortable with this one.

  11. I think the contract is a bit rich, but you’re paying the “Buffalo Tax”. I agree $6.5m would be the ideal value for Tage, he’d be worth nearly $6m on most good teams.

Everyone freaking out about the value just isn’t comfortable with the associated risk, obviously if his production for the duration of this deal is +80% of what it was last year then the value makes sense.

  12. Saw the signing and knew you'd like it Wayne, you sort of called the term and dollar figures in a way

  13. We have some kids that are really going to be something someday. Tage in addition to his hockey talents is devoted husband, father and devote decent Christian. Cozens & Krebs are just so determined to excel and compete, nothing will stop those two. All that character and leadership will rub off on the other guys too! I just hope I live long enough to see it. Here is my major prognostication, the Sabres will hoist a Stanley Cup before the Bills ever win a Super Bowl!

  14. The salary cap is stalled because of Covid and a special union – league deal. In 2 or so years the cap will soar. Inflation, full arenas and tv revenue will send it to $100+ million. So it's a deal.

  15. At the risk of being a pessimist I've never liked these long contracts. They are potentially dangerous for both team and player. (Remember Luongo unable to leave Vancouver? Or the horrors of an injured Dipietro still hurting the Isles years after retiring) I'm not saying Thompson will be like this as many play up to there term like Price has in Montreal injuries not withstanding. But it always worries me locking into a player for most of a decade. I'll give Adams the benefit here, he has a plan and Thompson is part of it. Hopefully these kids will want a cup win more than personal zeroes on there paychecks.

  16. I’ve seen so many negative thoughts on this contract…if Tage gives us 5/7 years like this one it’s a steal. I’d like to keep asplund with his defensive game though

  17. This is a big risk, not sure if Id be signing up for 7 years and for that much either. He had ONE good year… I understand the upside but the risk for me outweighs the reward. Imagine if he turns out to be a 15 or 20 goal scorer which is definitely possible seeing that he has only 18 goals total outside of last year. We would then have two horrible contracts (his and skinners). Few years go by and we got to pay some of the young guys and we have to let a few go cus of cap space problems. This move could honestly ruin a lot I'm sorry. I pray hes a 35 or at least a 30 plus goal scorer.

  18. Should’ve waited until the end of the season to offer him the hometown discount….like we did with Drury and Briere…oh,wait…

  19. I agree this is a really good deal. The salary cap is expected to explode in the next 3-4 years after all of the debt from the two shortened seasons is paid off. Also, Thompson was going to have arbitration rights after this coming season, so if he had another monster season and scores 40+ goals and 70+ points, he could have elected for arbitration that could have given him a 1-year deal that would take him right to UFA. So this deal is brilliant.
