Timo Meier Trade Breakdown (San Jose to New Jersey)

Timo Meier is just 26 years old and won’t turn 27 until October, so, on the surface, he seemed like the perfect player for the Sharks.

But Meier’s impending restricted free agency, along with San Jose’s current trajectory, made him an odd fit. Young and productive but unable to help the Sharks win consistently.

So on Sunday, the Sharks traded Meier, defensemen Scott Harrington, Santeri Hatakka, forward Timur Ibragimov, goalie Zach Emond and a 2024 fifth-round draft pick (via Colorado) to the New Jersey Devils for defensemen Shakir Makhamadullin and Nikita Okhotiuk, wingers Fabian Zetterland and Andreas Johnsson, a 2023 first-round draft pick, a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick and a 2024 seventh-round draft pick.

The deal ends Meier’s seven-year tenure with the Sharks.

Shortly after the trade was announced by both teams, Meier spoke to reporters on a video conference call and was asked if a contract extension with the Sharks ever was an option.

“There never really was any further talks about an extension, so at a certain point, you kind of think there’s going to be a trade happening,” Meier said when asked by San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng. “But you never know what happens in this business until the trade deadline is over. I was ready for everything to happen but also with the main focus on the hockey.”

  1. A trade the Sharks will regret like so many before Happy for Timo sad very sad for the sharks and for the first time ever questioning my loyalty to the sharks! And the NHL!

  2. Brodie so based on your assessments we should really be cleaning house in our player development personnel one might say they aren’t good enough at bringing players up to speed quickly enough? We will be in the same predicament unless they light a fire under these guys and develop our young talent quicker so we don’t end up trading our stars just as they become stars?

  3. I’m disappointed that we didn’t get a little more for him. However, if we traded him to Vegas, our fan base might burn the place down (that’s a figure of speech – not intended to incite or endorse violence).

  4. At this stage the Sharks were fleeced the Devils scored our best player without giving up any of there high end prospects or high end draft picks… Let’s hope Grier has some plan or we land massive at the draft

  5. As a fan I can't pretend to know all of the factors that go in to a deal like this, but trading your best forward in his prime for a 4th liner, a D prospect that isn't even playing in North America and a couple of protected draft picks feels like a huge L for San Jose. If Grier was willing to accept this underwhelming offer it's no wonder NJ jumped on it without the extension being signed.

  6. are the players that the sharks are getting in return for Timo, going to be in the active roaster?

  7. Hertl was a bust signing….much rather have traded him last season and resigned Timo instead. Only way this works out is if we somehow get the first overall pick and take Bedard

  8. We talked about this on Saturday, it’s still okay to be a little sad right? 😢

  9. there goes the team's offense. time for tanking at the tank for that high draft pick.

  10. Without the sign and trade component, this seems like an adequate trade return for the Sharks. This is simply an extended 14 month rental deal for the Devils and they gave up three prospects and a first round pick and a conditional pick. IMHO not a bad return.
If the lottery balls fall the Sharks' way and the Devils dont sign him, Timo is also free to come back here after next season as a UFA. Most of all we will see how any of these prospects turn out!

  11. sorry but at the moment the best in this trade is that we will win less games now. those picks will probably be late 1st round which is mostly a gamble. all in all disappointed. but man i hope i'm wrong

  12. I have been a fan of Timo's since he played in Halifax and will always be a fan. Sure will miss him in Teal but I will always watch him where ever he goes. Thanks Brodie for the update.

  13. Well presented, as always, Brodie. It's good to see that the Sharks are getting something out of this, and it will be interesting to see how the new players fit in to the organization. Of course we all wish Timo the best. The fact that there's a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick is even more motivation for us Sharks fans to wish Timo (and the Devils) well. In any case, I'm just grateful he didn't end up in Las Vegas.

  14. Horrible trade. Besides winning the cup, the goal of a team is to have young, proven stars. Timo Meier is just that. He’s 26 years old, he was the first or second best player on this team, he’s produced in the playoffs, he’s a great teammate, he’s having one of the best years of his career, and he looks like a force to be reckoned with.

Did I mention he’s 26 years old? The chances that any of the players we got in exchange, or any of the draft picks turn out to be as good as him, is not high.

I truly don’t understand what Grier just did, and for the first time in my life as a sharks fan, I am actually mad at management. I’m dumbfounded by how horrible this trade was.

  15. Seriously read the fine print
San Jose has very little cap space and no chance at playoffs any time soon

hertl ,couture ,karlson ,vlassic eat up eat up a combined 34 million for 2-4 more years at the very least with some contracts running much longer then that. Point being

Timo had a 10 million qualifying offer for just one season.

San Jose can’t afford another monster contract. With this trade we’ve got some breathing room ,instant youth in the lineup and some draft picks now and later. We would’ve lost him anyways. He wasn’t going to accept a team friendly deal on the sharks roster with us being almost last in the league

There was never enough cap space it was Meier or hertl,
Also stop blaming Mike Grier for navigating his way through Doug Wilson’s contract gauntlet it’s a rebuild ,re tool whatever you wanna call it.

Wait for the vlassic contract to expire. Hope karlson is traded or keeps his current point pace as a shark. And expect more trades. Root for the devils this playoffs and be happy Timo didn’t stay in the pacific.

  16. So the return is a 1st round pick, 2nd round pick, 2 grade B prospects, 2 lower end guys.

These comments are right, the return is terrible. Trading him makes sense, but not getting a single prospect in their top 5? Unbelievable

  17. I think the overwhelming feeling from the fanbase is disappointment. A little worried about the Grier Era. Hopefully he won't set us back a decade with his future moves.

  18. It's an absolutely terrible trade. Grier would rather have quantity over quality. This deal should've been Timo for Holtz and a 1st. Grier is quickly earning the reputation of being an unqualified pushover at GM.

  19. Very upset at the return for Timo. a 26 year old PPG player pending RFA who scores 30-40 goals a season should net more than 2 grade B prospects, a defensemen who hasn't sniffed North American ice yet, a roster player who is likely gone within a season and a half, 1 late 1st round pick, and conditional pick that's more likely to be a second. Not to mention, we had to ADD to the deal, sending out Hatakka and other pieces. The conditions on these picks kill the trade for us. 2 firsts that are easily attainable would make this trade much more of a wash, instead we have to hope the Devils get a steal and make a deep playoff run one of the next two years. We didn't even get any of the prospects the Devils were afraid of losing. They get to keep Hughes, Mercer, even Holtz. Our centerpiece for the return of Meier is their #11 best prospect in their pool? And only one for-sure first round pick? I hope GMMG has his resume still ready. He won't last long with these moves.

  20. The sharks for volume . They need more quality players. People you could find a diamond in the rough. Pavs was a 7 rd pick. Its all.about development for the sharks they need to bring in better development staff.

  21. The NJ Devils instead of wearing their helmets on the ice they should b wearing ski masks they basically stole Meier from the Sharks.

  22. Okhotiuk's going to be a solid defenseman for a long time. Zetterland's a solid bottom six guy who is gritty and plays good defense. Shakir's intriguing but no one has seen him play. If the Sharks make good use of that freed-up $10 million and hit on those draft picks, then this will be a very good deal for them. But, we won't know for several years down the road.

  23. Garbage trade although whoever came up with the “Give me fuel, give me fire, give me Timo 🤬Meier” needs applauded.

  24. SOOO HAPPY TO HAVE TIMOOOO FUCKING MEIER HERE IN NEW JERSEY! 😈🔥🔥 & Can’t wait for Fitzy to extend Timo Meier we are definitely getting him extended! 🖤 IT’S TIMOOOOO TIME ⏰, IN THE GARDEN STATE!

  25. Sooo happy we get Timo! We can afford to extend him and we are going too so happy to have him on our team, Timo is definitely one a kind just like our Jack Hughes! 😈🔥🔥🔥 LGDDDD! This was such a huge major trade! Such a blockbuster deal!

  26. I wouldn't be surprised to see Muk and Ok become fixture on San Jose's blue line long term. Neither were going to probably make it in Jersey with how deep their defensive talent pool is. Also don't sleep on Zet, he is solid and the fans are going to love him.

  27. We traded off an elite winger and received a package of 2nd rate players and draft picks in return. F grade trade overall for San Jose.

  28. Too much of a fluff piece by Brodie. I was hoping he was gonna give his honest opinion on the details of this trade and if he thought it was a good trade or bad trade

  29. Doug Wilson’s terrible vision, terrible contracts and his/EK65s greed is the whole reason why Sharks went from a powerhouse regular season team & cup contender to literally a dumpster fire.

23% of the cap is tied between Vlasic & EK. Ridiculous. The terms allow the player with all leverage.

Add Logan & Hertl into that now, you have almost 50% of the cap, tied between 4 players.

Burns and Timo salaries are retained. We’re paying Martin Jones for several more years.

The front office for the Sharks really screwed up. In all major sports, this is one of the worst swings within a few short years that a franchise has experienced.

For years, Doug Wilson failed to see the bigger picture of filling the roster, DW always went after the aging big name on the last year of their career. Spending money unnecessarily, cuffing the team financially and then we were stuck with no name minimum wage players who fill the roster. Which is still occurring, except those minimum players are the majority of the team.

The earliest that the Sharks would be back in playoffs is 2030. The books is very bad, 50% of the cap is tied up until 2026-2027 amongst the 4 players I mentioned.

  30. You guys will love Zettertank, Nikita and got a potential star in Shakir

  31. I don't understand Grier's plan, the Sharks should just blow everything up trade Hertl & Karlsson they are already halfway to gutting this team.

  32. The key to this trade is that Mike Grier had inside knowledge (from his former coaching job) of the New Jersey players that were being discussed, and NJ's large prospect pool allowed some sly negotiating to help Sharks develop the right return for their needs. Those 4 players would be already known to Grier, and the additional 2 high draft picks will add depth to the team. I predict that MG will trade for more draft picks, maybe just prior to the 2023 draft. What is sad is that Timo Meier will probably not be replaced on the Sharks and he fit the team identity that MG was trying to build, so he had to trade away the emerging star for future considerations and to better fit the salary cap system. Also I think NJ Devils have a pretty good hunch that Meier would want to sign on to their team long term by player conversations behind the scenes leaking intentions and dreams to each other. But Shark fans should just be happy cheering for their former favourite players as they make a playoff run this year on a Stanley Cup contender team, such as Carolina Hurricanes or New Jersey Devils.
