  1. the only things you mentioned about Knies that ultimately mattered; "he has value", he was "tradable", and most importantly… "when he wants to be". That last one was exactly why I love this trade! Marchenko? This guy's numbers have steadily improved… consistently so far in the NHL. He's 26, just scratching his prime, he thinks ahead of the play, he has great hands around the net And as far as I can tell so far there's no complaints about showing up consistently. Whatever's been happening here in Toronto over the last decade Hasn't worked. make moves, make trades get return and change the landscape And for God's sake break a few eggs to do it! I remember Boston trading joe thornton and then winning the Cup. They also traded Saigan.. and won the cup. I also remember the Leafs signing an aging almost 40 year old goaltender not all that long ago who put up some record numbers. Bobrovsky +++++ Marchenko +++?? keep tinkering, molding and shaping this team And don't fucking stop until we have a winner again!

  2. You know what Toronto needed? More soft guys and duds. Hooray! Can’t wait for another year of no one sticking up for anyone and just total farts in the playoffs, assuming we even get that far.

  3. The Leafs had to give up the money and prospects to get the best player in the trade. I had a soft spot for Knies but the fact is he was the team worst minus 30 last year. His 25 min in penalties is at least 40 minutes shy of power forward status. He works hard but intimidates no one.

Leaf fans will soon see this was a no brainer short and long term. They got the bigger, stronger, smarter and FASTER player. He’s a better passer and has batter shot. Krill could easily get 80+ pts on this team.

  4. One thing I haven’t heard anyone mention is the fact that the Leafs have the inside medical scoop on what’s going on with Knies’ lower-body/knee Injury. Perhaps there’s something there they don’t like.

  5. I am a habs fan. I always loved Mathew Knies. He is a heart and soul, big body go through a brick wall every shift type of guy. With that being said I am a fan of the Jackets. I LOVE watching these underdogs go, especially that tough son of a gun Olivier.

Marachenko is a fucking steal boys trust me. That guy has hands for days and wheels to boot. Knies is a great player but Marachenko is on another level skill wise. Its apples and oranges and depends what you want. If you want grit, forchek and toughness you want Knies. You want skill for days, Marachenko.

Habs in need of a guy like Mathew Knies.

For the record Elvis is a pretty damn good goalie when hes locked in.

  6. The reality is pretty simple – elite players are rare, and cap efficiency is not important anymore. Did you expect to sign Marchenko next offseason? no – there is not going to be any super stars just like there wasn't this last offseason. The reality is extremely simple – you never get a player of this caliber without a trade, and by taking advantage of a team that was forced to trade him off. The Leafs won the trade. Columbus never makes this trade if Marchenko wanted to stay there. Not in a million years. Which is why the Leafs won the trade. Marchenko is going to drive play and get 80+ points on this roster.

  7. Wouldn't worry about Knies to MTL for 2 reasons:
    1. Knies is infinitely more useful to Columbus playing as the complimentary piece to Fantilli and Kent Johnson (who's reportedly been resurgent in preseason). Knies' contract also provides both a long term top six option, and a contract created before the cap jump (cheap).
    2. If Kent Hughes and the Habs thought they had offered an "insane haul" for Marchenko before, but today's deal blew their offers out of the water; then it's reasonable to assume that what the Habs FO is willing to pay for Knies, is nowhere near what Don Waddell would want in return.

  8. I have confidence in this trade. The team is already forward heavy. Knies has already fallen off his game and he could be a 1off player from what ive seen. If chayka and sundin feel he's not a fit.. then I have to believe he is. Is Marchenko worth the swap? Hmmm.. I know we lose to Columbus when we play them. Then again,.. we lose to all the teams we beat on paper… so who knows lol. All I can say is good luck to us 😂
