Ottawa Senators 2026-27 NHL Season Preview | The Steve Dangle Podcast

1. They had historically bad goaltending last year the first half. Only thing holding them back. I’d bet my whole life savings they couldn’t do that again if they tried. Buffalo being a lock but Ottawa being put out of the playoffs is insane. Even people having Boston in ahead of Ottawa is crazy to me

3. I think the Senators are going to be way better than people expect this season. They were one of the best teams in the league last season in just about every possible metric outside of goaltending. They couldn't buy a save for 2/3 of the season yet still had 99 points. If Ullmark can give them even .895 goaltending, Ottawa is going to be incredibly dangerous. This was true even when Brady was out, they didn't need him last season. All they need is saves.

   Over, 3rd in the division.

4. They looked pretty bad in their pre-season games. I don't think anyone has looked particularly good.

5. About the goalie situation in Ottawa. Staios left it up to the goaltending staff to pick the backup for the Sens and they decided Ersson so that wasn't on Staios. I think him getting Eklund was great he has already shown what kind of player he is in preseason and I think he will blend will nicely with our Top 6 players. I need to see more from Burakovsky he's a fast skater made some good plays but want to see more from him

7. If Ullmark rides bare minimum league average sv% the senators are 3rd in the Atlantic. Merilainen needs to improve. Ersson needs to show that he isn’t completely washed.

   Defence is strong
   Offense is mid
   Goaltending will decide the season

8. Steve needs to make a stat correction on his pacific division predictions, he has Vancouver and the Flames in 7th place!!!!

10. Eklund suffered a serious wrist injury just before Worlds. He probably has a better statistical season with a full healthy off-season. Plus he's reunited with his best friend Fabian Zetterlund.

17. I think there is fair assessment here and obvious bias as leaf fans (shocker). This team’s structure is rivaled only by the hurricanes. All they need is averaging goaltending and they’ll be a playoff team.

    They have good young centres, and about 9 guys who can all score 20 in the top 9. Tkachuk was replaced on the scoresheet by two guys in Eklund and Burakovsky.

    Sanderson and Zub were in the top 10 as best defensive pairings in the league. Spence has emerged to be a reliable top 4 option when several guys went down and didn’t look out of place. The only notable guy they lost on the back end was Jensen and even he didn’t play down the stretch and in the playoffs…

    But it all comes down to who falls off first in this division. I can see this team in top 3, but I can also see this team in the bottom 6. I think they hit 5 and make second wildcard again.

20. I think the Leafs are actually going to get burned by three goalie trades in one year. Woll will play better than the return they got for him, Hildeby will turn into Rask ; ) jk, but he is going to be good, and Ersson will become a high quality backup/1B whose career is still going years after Bobrovsky retires. If you watch Ersson play as you said Jesse and not just repeat the stat line you will see an incredibly athletic goalie with great reflexes who is way too active in net and prone misreading plays. It is not a certainty that this can be corrected, he is getting past the age where most goalies sort this out or never do, but it is possible. He has the tools they are just scattered all over the floor.

21. @4:24 Nobody that was drafted by Edmonton wanted to play there, either.

    Toronto
    Florida

    Ottawa
    Buffalo
    Boston

23. I expect the Senators to be in a fight over a wildcard spot again this season. Eklund goes a ways to backfilling the points put up by Tkachuk, but they're also losing a lot of his in your face hockey and undisciplined penalties. I expect both Ottawa and Tkachuk to take a lot less dumb penalties, as Brady learns to appreciate what being a Florida Panther means to the way games are officiated.

I couldn't help but notice that people who publicly align as Sens fans have adopted a bizarre, nation-based parasitic identity in which they revel in negative validation of Leafs failures, but all things being equal, are simply a group of people who are obsessed with the Leafs, maybe more than traditional Leafs fans. It's probably more phychologiacally unhealthy and twsted to displace or abstract the obvious deep-seated emotional tie to the Leafs, even as the weight of their disappointment grows ever more heavy to bear. You have simply pivoted into the affectation of a caustic, chiding persona who, from this created safe distance, can then express the heartbreak over the Leafs as flippant superiority. I think this podcast has a promo code for a service where you can, you know, talk to someone. Oh, and, better luck next year.

25. As a Sabres fan and a woman, I want them to be terrible but I also want them to be better than tkachuk and fl so bad

27. These guys need to start pulling in analysts for teams they do not follow. Absolutely no context on Ersson save percentage. embarrassing. Coming from a flyers fan who thinks Ers can be a top goaltender, just needs more consistency

28. very early pre-season report: Errson looked better than expected, Yakemchuk has played himself off the NHL roster. Eklund already looks great and has chemistry with Cozens, Burakovsky looks fine.

29. Spence is unbelievable as a player. He had some of the best metrics across all d men in the league last season. Another step for him would be going from a bonafide top 4 to a bonafide top 2

30. 9:53 Adam, what are you talking about? Travis Green has been an NHL head coach twice. The first time was in Vancouver where JT Miller got him fired by throwing a tantrum at practise yelling ‘we don’t know what we are doing!’ For some stupid, idiotic reason the Canucks always took Miller’s side in all of his disputes and he’d probably be a Canuck still if the team was able to trade EP40 instead of him.
    Green has been a great coach and their play, numbers and record reflects that. All the players have bought in to his system. He isn’t going anywhere in the near future.

31. 13:22 that person is Ullmark’s personal goalie coach, Maciej Szwoch, who was helping him when he was away from the team and more importantly, when he came back to the team.
    Szwoch vouched hard for Errson who I think was brought in to make Ullmark as comfortable as possible.

32. If you think Green is an issue or is on the way out you haven’t watched Sens hockey the past 2 years.
    They went from bottom feeders to top 3 defensive team in the league with the exact same lineup they had under DJ Smith

35. Sens fan here, thought their assessment seemed mostly fair!

36. Zub played 81 games last year it was our leftside that collapsed injury wise. Ersson played ok in his first Pregame but we'll see he is a question mark
