Fraser Minten Contract: Did the Boston Bruins Get This Right?

The Boston Bruins have announced they have extended Fraser Minten to a 7 year contract extension with a cap hit of 7.2 AAV. Some are going to say right off the bat this a great deal. I in fact was calling for the Bruins to extend him early. Some though, are going to say the cap hit is too much and they overpaid.

In this video, I’m going to break down the new contract, talk about some comparisons, where the contract market is heading in the NHL and what we should expect from Fraser Minten for the next 8 years as a Boston Bruin.

  1. It's a big high in my view, but that depends largely on where he will be slotted in the lineup. If they stick him on the 3rd line, that's a bit rough. I imagine this means he is going to be given a chance at 2C.

  2. This is the Canadians roster construction theory sign guys with upside early, young and cheap ( in comparison to said player hitting or exceeding their ceiling and gets to UFA status) its a risk but if he hits it's brilliamt but if he doesn't where the salary cap is only going up it's not an albatross so good move all around. Lett Elias Lindholm be a lesson for the front office take a chance and pay a player for future performance instead of paying out the nose for past performance.

  3. I would have liked to have seen him play for one more season before committing to him for that long. I would have preferred a 4-5 year deal. I think the money is a little high, but I can live with it considering what everyone else is getting right now and if he plays to potential I'm sure it will be worth it.

  4. Absolutely love this deal. Three years down the road the Bruins will have a high quality center at a tremendous value. I enjoy watching him play. Extremely versatile player. Thanks for the update!

  5. Good signing. Bit high today but in 3 or 4 years it will look like a bargain. Plus, if they need to move him for some reason in the future, his contract doesn't make him un movable like E. Lindholm.

  6. I like the signing but there is some caution. Sweeney’s signing of Steeves and Hokijaru (butchered spelling), leave me with questions about his talent assessment.

  7. I love it. I think they got him for a steal. The cap is going UPPPP and signing him for 7 years means hell be getting damn near leauge minimum by the end of it, kinda like pasta right now, a 100 point player for 11 is nearly half what theyll get next season. This team is in a good spot to contend next season or the one after

  8. There's no protection on the first 5 years either, so it'll be incredibly tradeable if they need to go that route before year 6.

I think it'll end up being an incredible deal by then though and it'll be tough to move away from him. Even if he ended up as 3C I think 7.2 will still be looked at as a good value in a few years.

  9. I'll also add (like you alluded to) 16 goals on the 3rd line is pretty damn good for a 21 year old. Most of these kids putting up 60+ points are playong top line minutes on BAD TEAMS. When minten gets more leash, more minutes and probably PP1 time hell he putting up 60-80 points just like bergeron did. Its the full 200 foot game that gives his wingers way more time in the o-zone and makes them more comfortable playing their game. Minten and Bergy had almost identical stats in their first full seasons. Not saying hes bergy 2.0 but i think hes on track to be that type of player and that gets the bruins f/o rock hard 🤣🤣

  10. I agree with your entire synopsis Court. Worth every penny. Congratulations to Fraser and congratulations to Don and Cam for acquiring Minten, a first round pick, and a 4th round pick (Vashek Blanar a very promising defensive prospect) for Brandon Carlo. Credit where credit is due. Shrewd. The other thing to remember about the Bruins future in the centre position, Dean Létourneau. Fraser and James will have a chance to grow with Dean. The Bruins could be a powerhouse down the middle in the coming years. Plenty to get excited about. Go Bruins Go.

  11. Good job by the Bruins, making the move early. I may be wrong here, but I personally expect a shorter deal for Khusy, and possibly coming midway/later in the season too. I'm a huge Khusy fan, but I can't deny he could end up basically anywhere in the lineup, which could influence his results and value for the Bruins. It's the blessing and curse with comes being a "Swiss Army Knife" player – you are a useful player to have around, but you may not get big minutes consistently. BTW, great video – I love your content!

  12. Great deal, great to hear. His all around game is top shelf. He's 6'3'' and wins faceoffs, can play on the PP and PK, hits, and
plays the "200 foot game" and at Center which is an extremely important position of need for the B's.
He's the future of the Bruins and will be a Captain some day.
Now, sigh Khuzy and Poitras and get rid of the extra bodies and GO BRUINS!
