what a blessing to wake up wo this picture, and this talk. mario is the greatest. We watched them on the same ice, they were both in the prime I would say. I would choose Mario for my team first.
Even Gretzky said Mario was the greatest player ever. I agree totally, and think Gretzky was the greatest scorer ever…
Play Mario, Gretzky, Orr from
2005 to 2026 and you find out that Sid is the best
👻🐧👻
You would watch him play because you just knew he was going to do something that would make you question what you just saw.
It’s crazy to me that whenever Edmonton has a generational player Pittsburgh gets one or it’s the other way around.
Bravo DK 👏. Nice off season topic.
All that without having to mention him saving a franchise! Outstanding!
Gretzky was the better all-around scorer, Mario was the better goal scorer and all-around player. Similarly, Ovi is a better goal scorer than Sid, but Sid is the better all-around player and captain for leading by example.
It's an exclusive club beyond the HOF. It's not who's better, it's who's allowed to join. This group has no pecking order. It is a disservice to compare anyone in the club. It lessens their impact on the game. How do you quantify Roy or Hasek? Statistics matter little. These guys played on different teams and eras. It's OK for us to be biased, and I wouldn't have it any other way. However, the answer to the question is "yes".
It's hard to compare players with different skill sets in different situations and determine who is better. But comparing Mario to Gretzsky is easier to compare than comparing Sid to Ovie who are not at all alike. I remember Mario..it was back in the day when the opposition just hacked away at him and he was still able to score…you know…the 'Garage League' NHL days….contrast that to Gretzky having his protector with him at all times…Marty McSorley? Gretszky definitely had lots more room to roam and wasnt injured by sticks and such nearly as much. or cancer. I too give the big advantage to Mario…those skills, that mind, combined with such a physical presence, and in a much more difficult situation..never been anyone like him.
Thank you DK. Yes Mario is the greatest player of all time. He could stay on the ice and play relentlessly. Best all around. Great stuff DK awesome
Big fan of Sid. Hope he achieves all Pens records. Mario is the greatest Penguin ever. There would be no Pittsburgh Penguins without his amazing career and leadership. Period.
Its honestly the best debate on social media. I didn't get to see all of prime Gretzky, but I've saw prime Mario and everyone one since, there's no comparison. I am confident, Mario Lemieux was the most gifted and talented offensive player the NHL has ever seen. People have shown flashes, Mario did it every night. I know Gretzky suffered from back issues as well, but they plagued Mario from the start, plus no one in any sport has missed half a season fighting cancer and then come back to win the scoring title. To think what he would have done healthy (even reasonable healthy) and playing for 20 years. Ovi still wouldn't have caught him.
I suppose it applies to Mario too, but with modern video review I'm willing to bet that gretz would have at least a few hundred less assists
I don't think anyone will ever get more assists or points than Wayne, but I do think one day, someone will get more points than Wayne has assists
Wayne is so humble too. I do think Mario was better, but if anyone is close to Wayne, Wayne will always hype them up
I'm not on Twitter because I don't have to be. Not going to rant about that. But with Mario it's easy to default to "If he'd been healthy…" arguments, and I agree with most of those. But like you alluded to, I don't think you even need to go there. What he actually did is more than enough. For the last few years I've been putting it like this:
Gretzky is #1 all-time in P/GP at 1.921. Lemieux is breathing down his neck at 1.883 P/GP. That's a .038 points per game difference. The people behind them aren't even worth talking about because they're not remotely close.
So, say there's a marathon. Two guys are way ahead of the pack to an absurd degree. The first guy crosses the finish line, then the second place guy crosses 3.8 seconds later. Who's more impressive? Devoid of context it's the guy who finished first, obviously. But what if some important details were left out?
The guy in second place had a bad hip, a bad back, a heart condition, is a cancer survivor, and had a fully stocked refrigerator strapped to his back… and still only finished 3.8 seconds behind the guy in first place. With that information, who's more impressive then?
That was Gretzky vs. Lemieux.
80’s goaltenders were terrible and it wasn’t just the small pads. Having said that, I miss 80’s hockey.
