The NHL is entering a new financial era, and the Montreal Canadiens could be one of the biggest winners.
With the NHL salary cap expected to rise dramatically over the next several seasons, projections suggest the league could reach a cap ceiling of approximately $123 million by the 2028-29 season, a massive increase from the current structure. Official NHL and NHLPA projections already show the cap climbing to $113.5 million by 2027-28, and it may continue to rise beyond that. This changing landscape could completely reshape how teams build championship rosters.
In this episode of The Starr & D’Amico Show, we break down how NHL expansion, growing league revenues, and a rapidly increasing salary cap could create a major advantage for the Montreal Canadiens.
Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton have spent years building a young core around players such as Lane Hutson, Ivan Demidov, Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Kaiden Guhle. Many of those players are already signed to long-term contracts, potentially giving Montreal incredible financial flexibility just as the salary cap explodes.
Could the Canadiens be perfectly positioned to take advantage of the NHL’s next economic boom?
We discuss:
• The projected rise in the NHL salary cap
• How NHL expansion could increase league revenues
• Why the Canadiens’ contract structure is different from many NHL teams
• How Montreal could use additional cap space to pursue elite talent
• Why the Habs may be entering a championship window at exactly the right time
Could the Canadiens be building something that gives them a long-term competitive advantage?

Great great show, thank you guys. 🙏❤️
Awesome episodes, guys. Very good info and banter as always.
Would you guys be interested in doing an episode on a potential expansion draft at some point? Curious to hear your thoughts.
Be kind to horses! 🙏🐴
Pro sports greed is pricing itself into a collapse…….Fans will stop buying tickets……
kinda funny that Larking is not getting traded XD will be nice in the locker room
Shawn's face is pure orange (like Trump's). Hard to watch. Adjusting the lighting would be helpful. 😊
Why not both summers ???
Maybe they should also consider the fans and stop raising prices on tickets and TV packages. Once upon a time, everyone could watch for free on tv .
I don’t want an expansion. We drafted, we trained, we signed our own players. Houston Hands off our players!’
if there's high end talent available.
Kent won’t handcuff himself until the absolute right guy comes up.. He wants to be able to strike then and basically then only… small maneuvers only until then.. let the young guys cook
Montreal will be the place to be in 28,29,and 30.. good free agent are going to want to play here at a fair rate if they know absolutely success is very much an option
That Marco smile at the end would put the Cheshire Cat to shame!!!!!! Suspicious.
I smell something brewing….
I said Mcdavid would come to Mtl last summer and every chatter called me crazy. It's looking more and more likely. Need a D man in the meantime tho..
In 26-27, people are going to expect a lot more than years past & Habs will need to add for the Fanbase
Mcdavid or mckinnon ufa window is where we need to be willing to go all in
Guys we are in a crazy situation. If corruption in every industry is being systematically identified and being shown to the public how will the NHL fair when the gambling revenue is eliminated.
Imagine how much money Austin Mathew’s is going to ask for at the end of his deal coming up soon????
Given the state of salaries skyrocketing, would we ever see them renegotiate the salaries for his top players to "make them happy" when they will be severely underpaid for who they are? I'm talking about Hutson, Demi, Caufield, Slaf….
Summer of 2028. Just in time to sign McDavid.
Hi guys, that makes a lot of sens as usual.
The most important contract will be Suzuki, that will set the table for Caufield and the rest. They could also sign Zharovsky and HAge the same summer. So Suzuki is the key for the next 10 years the summer of 2029. I wouldn'T overpay any player before that Summer. It would set a bad precedent for Suzuki to sign at a reasonable price.
“Play On!”
