Ethan MacKenzie had seven goals in his entire WHL career before 2025-26. He scored 22 that season, finishing with 58 points in 59 games from the blue line — after going unselected in two consecutive NHL Drafts.
In December 2025 Hockey Canada invited him to World Junior camp as a genuine surprise inclusion, and he scored three points in his opening game against Czechia. In June 2026 the Toronto Maple Leafs drafted him 69th overall. He is headed to the University of North Dakota.
This video is a post-mortem on the scouting process, not a highlight package: the three structural reasons the NHL draft repeatedly misses defencemen (longer development curves, production stats that don’t describe the job, and ice time allocated by coaches rather than talent), why the World Junior Championship is the one test that removes every excuse at once, and the honest case that one breakout season is still one season.

He never had a chance to play meaningful minutes. I think he’s going to be a winner.
Nice video, covering a story I hd not heard before. Cool that you have started this channel…and good luck!
