I see the signings of all these (marginal) forwards as a way to force out Geno after this year, even if Geno's productive. The rationalization from Dubus will be, "We got all these young guys that Dan has to play, that I've invested in, and Geno isn't under contract for next year."
It's a way to rationalize forcing out Geno with volume. Hopefully, Sid and the fan base does not fall for it. Geno at 41 will still be infinitely better than Ville Koivunen or Nick Robertson could ever dream of being.

Spot on about the market evolution, DK. The Koivunen contract only looks like a "gamble" if you ignore modern NHL economics. When unproven high-pedigree young defensemen are commanding $7M+ and elite young forwards are commanding $15M+, getting a 23-year-old playmaker with a high point-per-game AHL pedigree locked down for 8 years at just $4M AAV could be incredible foresight. The "speculation tax" on youth is real, and locking in high-ceiling players early protects the Penguins from future cap chaos. For me, the key now is roster deployment: clear out the veteran roadblocks and let Koivunen and others play their natural offensive and defensive profiles.
I don't care how big of a salary players get. I'm ticked when the GM is compelled to play the money to justify a contract. Admit the mistake, move on, and sit the money if someone is doing a better job. You cannot let money get in the way of winning a game. Worry about money off the ice.
