In “The NHL Death That Canucks Fans Never Got Over,” we tell the heartbreaking story of Luc Bourdon, the young Vancouver Canucks defenseman whose life was tragically cut short just as his NHL career was beginning.
Bourdon wasn’t just another prospect.
He was expected to become a cornerstone of Vancouver’s blue line for years to come. After a promising rookie season, the future looked limitless. Then, at just 21 years old, a motorcycle accident brought that future to an unimaginable end.
The loss devastated teammates, coaches, and an entire fanbase that had watched one of hockey’s brightest young talents disappear far too soon.
This wasn’t just the death of a promising player.
It was the loss of everything he was still destined to become.

Your videos always do a fantastic job of portraying all aspects of a person or situation. We get to see what made a player who they were and what kind of environment surrounded them, and you do a great job of covering issues that create those situations. I think too often we only see the highlight reels and don't get to see the whole picture — you give us a lot more of the whole picture. Thank you.
Learning the type of person who Luc Bourdon was makes his tragic death hit so much harder, and not because of how he was playing on the ice, it's because of the type of person Luc was off the ice. The story of the donation to allow less fortunate kids to play the game. My heart goes out to Charlene. I can't imagine seeing a loved one die right in front of me like that. I hope Luc's family is able to find peace, and understand the type of person Luc was.
This video hit hard. Knowing the whole story and learning a few things.
If you could do a video on Steve Chaisson, that would be nice
The ai scripts are too jarring to watch these videos
Hockey is a business only. Let’s not kid ourselves. Tragedies with players lives will continue to happen.
R.I.P. Luc Bourdon.
I grew up on dirt bikes and have been riding 35+ years but riding but street bikes scare the crap out of me and have never ridden one. Being that exposed with morons in metal weapons is high skill level. I'm considering buying my late father in laws to ride out west and see the national parks when my divorce is final, but I would never ride a major city in the western hemisphere on the regular. All the best to his family and loved ones.
This YouTuber will fudge a story just to push a narrative that puts the blame on the NHL and its teams.
"5 teams in one season"?!? Let's break that down, since the host won't .
Team 1 – He started the 2006-07 year like many first rounders, playing 9 games for their NHL team and being sent down prior to the 10th so a year of their entry level contract isn't burned. A 9 game stretch to show the team what the player can do, as well as the player learning the NHL game and lifestyle.
Team 2 – His junior team, where young draft picks return to so they can improve their game.
Team 3, Team Canada, where the best Junior players play a 2 week tournament, before going back to their teams.
Team 4, – Like most star players in their last year before turning pro, they are traded to a team making a Memorial Cup run. Usually traded for a bunch of prospects and picks, totally common. If you read his HockeyDB, the Screaming Eagles went on a playoff run due to his help.
Team 5 – When the Cape was done their playoff run, the Canucks farm team in Manitoba was starting a playoff run themselves. A very common occurrence is to have a prospect join the AHL team as a stepping stone towards pro life.
A little bit of hockey knowledge and some simple online searches prove this guy has no idea what he's talking about.
This guy avoids player culpability in every video.
He's just larping as a knowledgeable hockey fan.
He’s not that important
Canucks still run like a poverty franchise. RIP
Thanks for the video. I been saying it for years, he would have gotten us past the blackhawks atleast once, and the canucks would have one cup atleast, if not for that tragic accident. I was lucky enough to see him score a pre-season goal..top shelf slapshot!
I don't think it's fair to blame the Canucks or any team when a player gets killed in a horrible accident. I don't see any carelessness, I just see an accident. May Luc Bourdon rest in peace
What a great video! R.I.P Luc
Can any pro sports league really prevent a player under contract from riding a motorcycle?
It is always sad to see a loss like this especially so young. I pray for his mother. I will say this, though riding a motorcycle is a dangerous task as it is. There are so many things that you have to be aware of as a rider when you’re riding out in public. The other thing you have be aware of as a rider is your skill level. You saying that he just got his motorcycle license a few weeks before the crash tells me everything. This unfortunately it’s just a bad accident. I really don’t think it’s fair to say that the NHL needs to do something about this. That’s like saying the NHL needs to take action against those players who drive hot rods and get an accidents. I think the NHL’s gonna have a hell of a time trying to regulate that. I’m just sorry that young man lost his life so quickly while riding a motorcycle.
Rest up king
I remember Luc's friend Kris Letang wanted to get a motorcycle after Luc bought his but after the tragedy Letang has sworn off riding motorcycles in respect to Luc.
Franchises do have restrictions on some activities, not sure about motorcycling. Maybe motor cross.
That one hit me right in the feels (when you showed Burrows do that celly.)
He is from my area, i played with him when i was just a child during hockey practice… i was at his funerals… still can’t forget these moment he was an amazing person who never looked down on anyone. Repose en paix Luc on ne t’oublies pas
It seems like Luc was on the path to becoming an excellent defenseman despite being “shuffled around”…that’s just hockey in the NHL. Interesting how this video tried to link a completely unrelated to the NHL poor decision to buy an overpowered motorcycle by a young overpaid professional hockey player who is also an inexperienced rider to blame the Canucks organization for violating their player in many ways. The Canucks and the NHL are not “the big bad wolves”…the players know the business they are getting into and let’s not forget are being paid very well to do what is expected of them. Would have been a much better story had Luc played long enough to accomplish all that was expected of him…seems like a upstanding person. RIP Luc Bourdon.
