THG at 10: Talking About Sidney Crosby

1. I’m not a Pens fan but I certainty recognize he’s a great player. I did wonder after those series of concussions in 2011 if he would be the same player but he has continued to be effective.

2. I was hoping CrosbyOvechkin would retire at the same time so they could go in the fame together, but Crosby may have more left in the tank. They really did save the NHL after that lost season from the lock out.

3. It's funny how when Crosby plays 80+ games, Pens tend to miss the Playoffs.

5. Never understood why people wanted Sid traded so much. I find more respect for guys like Sid who win a ton with a team and choose tho stay with the team when it's no longer a contender.

7. Don't forget why he wasn't able to get out of first round in 22' playoffs…. Trouba elbowed Sid in the head up when pens were up 3-1 in game and 3-1 in series. Sid left that game and missed next game. Came back for game 7 but was too late to change momentum. The Sid line was monstrous until that cheap shot. Rangers got extremely lucky that series, it's very clear things would've been different. Also fuck trouba.

9. As a 51 year old swede with no sympathy whatsoever for the Penguins I have grown a need for getting myself a Crosby jersey. Don't know but in a sports world that takes a bite from my excitement level every year through extremely cynical capitalism (european football mostly, hockey is my second sport) and disgusting betting commercials, Sidney Crosby is like a shiny diamond.
   I root for all the swedes but I adore Crosby. Hope he plays another 5 years and gets to 2200 points.

    Gretzky himself has commented how remarkable it is that he’s still getting a point per game.

    But no matter where he'll end up on those lists, he will be regarded as one of the best players to ever play.

One thing people often forget about when comparing Ovechkin and Crosby to Kucherov, McDavid, and MacKinnon is how much higher scoring hockey has been in the last 10 years than it was from 2005-2015. One of the most underrated hockey players of all time is Joe Thornton because he put up some really crazy assist numbers despite hockey being so incredibly low scoring during his prime. We're seeing about half a goal per game more now than we did for much of the prime years of Ovechkin and Crosby.

36. There was true worry about the length of his career with all the concussions early on. He adjusted his game somehow, to keep his head in the game, and out of trouble.

37. Sid is going to be mad coming into this year about losing to the Flyers in the playoffs. I don’t know if he’ll be able to get his revenge/lead the Penguins deeper than in previous years, but I do know that he despises Philadelphia with a burning vitriol. Ever since the Derian Hatcher incident in his rookie year.

38. Pittsburgh has been so lucky (if it is luck) to get what might be considered two of the top 5 players of all time. Mario Lemieux, the best (I will fight you), and then Sidney Crosby, as franchise players, but oh yeah also some "mere sidekicks" like Jagr and Malkin. 😮
    There haven't really been dynasty teams like the old days (given the cap, league parity, and whatnot) but in this century I would make the case that the Pens in the Crosby era have been as close as we'd get to one, and Crosby more than anyone has been the reason for it. He's done it all – World Junior champ, Stanley Cup champ, Olympic gold. Just imagining if he played for Vancouver, Montreal, any Canadian team, if that kind of team could have been built here… 😋
    However, the Pens are not chumps – you don't trade away a legend. You bend reality to accomodate the idea of having them play their whole career for your franchise.

42. I once heard Sidney Crosby described as "the world's most talented 3rd-line center" and I feel this is a pretty apt way too describe him. He can show off his crazy playmaking and score unbelievable goals, but the day-in day-out of his game is a straightforward grind, jumping into board battles, racing around the ice (a bit more slowly than he used to, but still), not afraid to take or give a hit. It honestly makes his longevity all the more impressive.

43. January 5th 2022, Best overall game by a player. 1 G 1A. Knocked out for a minute from Mikkola. Stays in game and brings team back to Victory. Got stitches After the game. No Fighting, I call it the Sydney Crosby Hat trick.

44. He was utterly robbed for that Hart in 2017. McDavid being handed it over Crosby that year was a joke, solely because he had a buncha power-play/advantage assists like always and had like exactly 100 pts… But, the Stanley Cup & that Conn Smythe vindicated him though, he said you can have that regular season MVP kid—I’LL take the more important one.

    Also, I loved those jerseys. The 2005-2016/17 unis were better. I just like the black & gold better than black & yellow.. There was more black on those unis too. I like more black. Everybody likes more black on a jersey.

45. The absolute only reason Crosby gets Selke votes is because he's the biggest overrated Canadian nepo baby possibly in league history, who gets undeserved votes for everything, every single year. Real Selke candidates spend upwards of one and a half minutes on the PK per game, Crosby spends what, 10 seconds per game on the PK? Take the Canadian bias and the special Sidney Crosby bias out of your evaluation, and you're left with an over the hill, but still pretty decent centre, who was the best player in the world for a total combined of what, about three years of his career. The third best player in Penguins history who got all of his biggest accomplishments playing with multiple other hall of famers in their prime.
