Love the insight from a skills coach- the challenge is AAV is based on length of contract, if Minton got $1M for year one, and his contract were to go up $1.5M per year, even though his first three years he’s averaging 2.5MM, over the 8 year, that AAV leaps to $6.5MM, so it has a significantly higher impact on the cap then the money the player is making. Clearly there is the opposite impact at the end of the contract when a guy is making $8.5 or $10MM and only counting $6.5M AAV

8. From February-May last season, Fraser Minten's final 33 games including the playoffs, he only scored 6 lousy points where he primarily played with David Pastrnak

   Minten excelled in a 3C role between Jeannot & Kastelic Minten also scored 84% of his points Oct-Jan in that same 3C role

   Come February of last year the Bruins decided to move Minten up to 1C to play with Pasta

   Minten reacted to this change by cratering offensively to the degree where they gave up on him at 1C towards the end of the regular season because the production simply wasn't there

   Minten was clearly in over his head as a 1C once he had to play against other teams' shut down defenders & better offensive players every shift

   Meanwhile when Minten was appropriately slotted as a 3C he was able to take advantage of those much easier matchups down in the lineup & his production in that role reflected as such

   Minten is not an elite skater, play maker or goal scorer so this nonsense he's a future NHL 1C is exactly that, nonsense

   What's wrong with Fraser Minten being one of the NHLs better 3Cs who still has a shot at developing into a 45-50-ish point 2C someday?

   Nope, Bruins homers have to crown Fraser Minten as the heir to Patrice Bergeron and declare him the Bruins new 1C😂

   How about we exercise some patience here & wait to see what Fraser Minten does this upcoming season before giving him the $15M-$18M AAV Bruins homers seem to think he's worth today🤣

   If Minten over performs than great, everyone wins, give him more money next off-season after he's earned it. So if he puts up 40-50 points next year, fine, give him a 5 year extension with some (not full) trade protection and an AAV in the $7M-$8M area as based on current projections, the NHL Salary Cap is expected to raise from $104M up to $113M for the 2027-28 season.

   At that point paying Fraser Minten $7M-$8M will be what you used to have to pay a middle six forward $4M-$5M to score 40-ish points

   The new NHL is also brining with it new & inflated NHL salaries

   But again, if Minten scores 40-50 points there will be nothing wrong with giving him a 5-7 year extension for $7M-$8M per year. However, if Minten regresses a bit or simply just proves he's more of a 3rd line center, than giving him an 8 year extension now at an AAV $7M-$8M will already look like a bad investment and the reality is, there's simply isn't any good reason to take that risk.

   Giving any player an 8 year term isn't wise, let alone a player such as Fraser Minten that still has a crap ton still to prove

   If Minten will take an 8 year extension at a $4M-$5M AAV today, than take the risk. The Bruins have until September 16th to offer Minten an 8 year extension, after that the maximum number of years he could re-sign with Boston would be 7 (only 6 years if he were to be re-signed by another NHL team besides Boston)

   However, as Fraser Minten will be a restricted Free Agent at the end of this upcoming year without arbitration rights, he'll have little leverage in his next contract negotiation

   If some dumb GM wants to offer sheet Minten for $12M-$15M a year, fine, take the draft picks and say good riddance because Fraser Minten is not even remotely close to being an elite NHL player and over paying average players like they're elite ones is exactly how you burn the salary cap needed to actually sign, trade or offer sheet real, Top 6 forward & or Top 4 defenseman should they become available

   The Bruins Farm System is still very shallow and they already have far too much Cap Space tied up in far too many average roster players today to risk overpaying Fraser Minten in both AAV and term solely based on a rookie season where in Minten's final 33 games he wasn't very good and when in the post season versus Buffalo he gave the Bruins absolutely nothing
