Mason West might be the most fascinating prospect in the entire Chicago Blackhawks organization.
The Blackhawks traded back into the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft to select West 29th overall, targeting a 6-foot-6, right-shot center with size, skill, mobility, and one of the most unusual development stories in hockey. Just months after hearing his name called at the draft, West was still under center as the starting quarterback for Edina High School, leading his team to a Minnesota state football championship.
Now the football chapter is complete, West is fully committed to hockey, and Blackhawks fans are about to find out how high his ceiling can go.
West was not simply playing football as a side activity. He was a legitimate two-sport star and a captain in both sports. As a junior quarterback, he threw for nearly 2,600 yards and 37 touchdowns. On the ice, he recorded 27 goals and 49 points in 31 games while playing for former NHL defenseman Curt Giles.
Every NHL team knew West planned to finish his final football season before turning his full attention to hockey. The Blackhawks drafted him anyway, then watched him help Edina complete a storybook playoff run that ended with a 42-35 state championship victory at U.S. Bank Stadium.
West joined the Fargo Force in December without the benefit of training camp or the first three months of the USHL season. Despite entering the league well behind everyone else, he produced 25 points in 38 regular-season games and added six more during the playoffs. His game continued improving as the season progressed, giving Chicago an early glimpse of what he could become once hockey received his complete attention.
The encouraging signs have continued at the World Junior Summer Showcase. West scored against Sweden, contributed offensively in another matchup, and is now competing for an opportunity to represent Team USA at the 2027 World Junior Championship.
The physical tools immediately stand out. Centers who are 6-foot-6 and can genuinely skate are incredibly difficult to find. West combines that frame with a long reach, a powerful shot, soft hands, and the ability to make skilled plays rather than relying only on size.
Then there is the quarterback mentality.
Blackhawks scouting director Mike Doneghey has talked about West’s ability to scan the ice, read defensive pressure, and remain comfortable while opponents close in around him. Years of reading defenses from the pocket may translate naturally to playing center, where West must survey the offensive zone, identify openings, and make decisions under pressure.
That does not mean West is a finished product. He remains one of the rawest players selected in the first round because he has played less high-level hockey than many prospects his age. His size can become a dominant advantage, but he still needs to learn how to use it consistently to protect the puck, attack the net, win battles, and control shifts.
That is why Michigan State could be the perfect next step.
West joins a loaded Spartans program with elite young talent and a coaching staff that can give him time to develop without rushing him toward the NHL. The Blackhawks do not need immediate results. Their prospect pool is deep enough to allow West several years to improve his details, grow into his frame, and find out whether his rare combination of size and skill can translate at the highest level.
This is a high-upside swing, and the risk is part of what makes West so interesting. If everything comes together, Chicago could have a massive right-shot center with vision, shooting ability, skating, and the intelligence to play in every situation. That is the type of player teams spend years trying to acquire.
And the most exciting part is that nearly everything West has accomplished so far happened while he was splitting his focus between two sports.
Now he is all hockey.
