James Hagens Prospect Profile: What Bruins Fans Should REALLY Expect
When James Hagens was drafted by the Boston Bruins 7th overall, the fan base cheered and started to build their expectations on what they hoped the type of player James Hagens would become.
People wanted him in Boston right away; even James himself wanted that, but expectations can get the best of anyone. Bruins fans got their wish last year, but going into this season, what should we expect from James Hagens? What position is he going to play, what type of player is he, and where do I think he will develop into?
In this video, I’m going to try and answer all of those questions and do a full prospect profile on James Hagens.

What are your expectations of James Hagens?
He was the prospect I wanted, and when he fell to us I was ecstatic! He brings speed, skill, and a creative energy that I feel like we haven’t had in a minute! My only worry is less him, and more our development system, which luckily is being re-worked. I’m hoping for a true top line center, but we all know those are hard to find.
I have a lot of hope for hagens when Marchand got traded he was the last player on the team I loved that left I like swayman but I wanted Hagens so bad and when we got him I was so happy he plays a fast paced game he’s in the corners digging out the puck he can play make score and have great positioning might be a hot take I rather have a fast paced 2 way guy put up 70-90 points a season then a pure goal scorer that doesn’t back check and net hangs at the blue line for the puck
As always great player analysis! I can't wait to watch what he does with a full season.
I hope Minten / Hagens becomes the new Bergeron / Krejci type duo for the next 10 years. 🤞🏼
Yo court great vid you family have awesome day
Naw. Not a C at the NHL level. Not engaged enough at D end. Mediocre at FO dot. IMO – Worst case -Teuvo Teravainen. Good for 40 to 50pts a season. Best case – Nick Schmaltz – 70pt a season winger.
I really hope you're right. My gut feeling based on everything I've seen is a dependable third liner with Coyle like numbers.
I would love to see full rebuild from the Bruins. With Sweeney's trading and Adams' drafting they would be awesome. But I won't live up to that😢
I was honestly hoping Porter Martone kept falling in the draft and we got him @7th….I just honestly felt he was more of a Bruins type player than Hagens. I'm not saying Hagens is not skilled, but Lysell was skilled, Poitras's skilled, and we see how the organization handles skilled players. The only way Hagens succeeds in the Bruins culture is if he's skilled and he develops chemistry with someone and his points reflect his skill level. If they demand he plays a certain way that he's not capable of playing, he'll go the way of the dodo bird.
Kid is an absolute stud. He drives play and sturm needs to let him. Any screwups this year by letting him figure things out are worth it. I’m guessing around 50 points and I hope they play him at center.
Don't know if this means anything, but I noticed that Hagens was quick to get off the ice at the end of his shift. Maybe it's just a young player doing what young players do. With exposure to the NHL and a summer to absorb the experience, he will probably be more comfortable going into the next season.
I hope he's a big part of our future, but I'm not gonna expect it right away. Like Minten, he needs seasoning and time to grow into an important role. The last time had high hopes for a player it was Lysell and look where that went. I'm learning to temper my expectations.
Do you think that Haggens upside is like Marc Savard ?great pod cast I enjoy watching them keep up the great work 👍😊
As a Bruins/ Boston college fan I’m really excited for James Hagans! I saw him play for BC a lot last season, I like his game and offensive ability!
I sincerely hope the Bruins are committed to Hagens in their lineup every single night, despite the ups & downs. Based upon how they handled him last season and in the playoffs, Im concerned they won't. #PlayTheKid
I think a Hagens minten khuzi line is interesting
I was actually hoping for Martone over hagens but still wasn’t upset when we got him he was the right choice I just hope fans keep realistic expectations for him obviously we all want that superstar centerman, but there’s always a chance he could be a middle six center/winger hope he develops well and is the future play driver
I agree that starting him lower on the lineup as the 3C is a wise move to allow him to learn the position at the NHL level and get reasonable matchups and zone starts. I'm really excited to see how his game develops.
The simple version: NHL teams have a long history of overvaluing size and physical tools on draft day, and undervaluing the players who just see the game better than everyone else. This draft may turn out to be another example of that.
Hagens, by contrast, was considered by many the best prospect in the entire draft class for stretches of the year — not because of his size (he’s undersized for the position), but because of how well he sees the ice and sets up plays. That’s usually the trait that matters most long-term. Size can be added or coached around. Vision and hockey sense are much harder to teach.
Getting Hagens at 7 — after three teams passed on him for bigger, more “finished-looking” players — looks like Boston finally being on the right side of that same bet.
The catch: none of this is settled yet. It usually takes about three years to know if a prospect can even hold down a regular NHL job, and up to four years to know if he becomes a real difference-maker.
• Peterka – Zacha – Pastrnak
• Khusnutdinov – Minten – Geekie
• E. Lindholm – Hagens – Mittelstadt
• Kastelic – Poitras – Jeannot
Hagens gets 40 points 15 goals
I remain cautiously optimistic. I think his floor is roughly Casey Mittelstadt, and his ABSOLUTE ceiling is roughly Jack Hughes. I don’t expect a big year from him, but 30-40ish points is reasonable if he’s given a long enough leash.
Hopefully they wont pound him into the boards. Is macklin celebrini n ow the highest paid NHL player??
excited to see what Hagens and Minten become
Great pick! Needs 10 lbs of beef, Great start would be 3rd line center!
