The Montreal Canadiens continue to be linked to Columbus Blue Jackets winger Kirill Marchenko, and the latest report suggests a trade could happen sooner rather than later.

In today’s episode of The Starr & D’Amico Show, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down the newest report connecting the Habs to Marchenko, what we’re hearing about the trade market, why Kent Hughes remains interested, what a potential deal could cost Montreal, and whether Marchenko is the missing top-six winger the Canadiens have been searching for.

Could Ivan Demidov eventually play alongside Marchenko? Is this the blockbuster trade Canadiens fans have been waiting for? We discuss all the latest rumours, possible trade packages, and what this could mean for the Habs heading into the 2026-27 season.

Let us know in the comments:

  1. I have been watching your videos for a few months. Great content, really appreciate it but I have to ask: "Marco, what's to your left? You regularly are looking this way and it's been piquing my curiosity for a while now. Please, I need to know. šŸ˜…

  2. Marco is forgetting a very crucial point. Dobson wanted to be trade to Montreal and nowhere else and I feel that for Marchenko it is the same story. He would prefer more to play with his Russian fellow Demidov than Cooley. That weights in a lot in a trade. I think the Habs have a little advantage on Utah if they come up with the good package.

  3. Columbus is a hole, why would anyone want to play there… they are perennial losers in a rebuild, and Waddell is a GM-loser . He will,be fired as GM by Thanksgiving

  4. CLB will wait and see how the team is doing mid season. If Clb is doing well Marchenko might very well resign it all depends on the team's record. The problem for Clb management is that Marchenko hinted that he is not coming back that makes it extremely difficult to get fair value.
Personally I have been a huge Marchenko fan since the wjc.

  5. Demidov is DONE improving he will see more points unless he gets better line mates.Demidov often frustrates me because he doesn't shoot enough or likes to play that perimeter game that playes him at bad shooting angles.Hage and Marchenko would be the ultimate goal imo a better line than the first line but I don't see Mtl getting Marchenko.

  6. Marchenko needs to want to resign wherever he is traded to. That’s the bottom line . If he doesn’t want to extend in Utah the Jackets hands will be tied .

  7. Tempering expectations is one of Marco's best traits for a market that can run a little wild with enthusiasm (and the pitchforks) at times. Marchenko is an ideal add if the price is right. Hopefully they can get it done with minimal impact on the prospect pool

  8. I’ll jump in on the uninformed wild-ass speculation: my guess is a trade dated 17 September 2026 (Go Guy Go):

Sign and trade to Montreal for 8x 10.86M AAV

Jackets get: Guhle, Zharaovski, Pickford, Dach (half retained), a 1st & a 2nd.

Does that pass the sniff test, Hank?

  9. Gee Weez guys! almost 4 minutes of nothingness and noise pollution before the show starts! Almost worst than Marinaro… I understand the sponsors but gees… I never watch you live. Too long before it starts. I watch minutes after and just fast forward. But i always click the thumb tho'…

  10. I think most likely for Montreal to get this done, it's going to involve a 3rd team that is willing to part with something Columbus wants, and that 3rd team is going to be more interested in futures (Zharovsky, Reinbacher, etc)

  11. I could see Montreal acquiring Marchenko , but only if Gorton & Hughes have already talked to his agent and he is willing to take the similar deal that Demidov has. He has the potential of being that missing RW the team needs for their top line. I could also see a straight-up trade for Hage (no extra top round draft picks thrown in) as a fair deal. After all one is a projected top line center and the other is 2nd line right-winger.
I also agree with D'Amico , this is the type of trade you will not hear about or the details until after it is done. Go HABs.

  12. Nobody said it was going to be a Kirby Dach and a bag of pucks for Marchenko. Nobody is thinking that…we all know Kirby is worthless, can't stay health, can't play a 200 foot game, is not using his size to his advantage, and honestly is not a even a bottom 6 point producer…we get it. What is slightly annoying is that whenever Shaun gives some trade packages lately you come back now with Montreal doesn't have what it will take to made a trade for "said player" so tell us what you think is going to happen then?

  13. Utah is not on the same level as Montreal I don’t know how or what way you would think that

Sure they got elite guys coming in
    Desynoyes
    Iginla
    Simiashev

    We got Reinbacher
    Hage
    Fowler
    Zharovsky coming in

They’re top guys like Cooley Guenther Keller
Aren’t as good as Suzuki caufield Hutson period. No discussion
We made it to the top 3 where was Utah?

    L take Marco

  14. Marco, I heard Columbus had offered Voronkov and 2 firsts for Dobson and 10.5 per season if he signed! So in a sense, it all comes down to where these guys ā€œWANTā€ to extend!

  15. The russian connection in this kind of deals is not to be overlooked. Montreal is deep in Russian hockey business and they have, at the moment, the upper hand on all Russian players negotiating in relation to other teams.

  16. I also see caufield slowing down at age 31-32 because of his size. Roughly the same with Suzuki 32 to 34. Average size, not a top tier talent, not a true speedster. We need to get a 2nd line center and right D for Hutson ASAP. Matheson like him but our D is soft and he's also the D that makes most mistakes per minutes played.

  17. I am huge Marchenko fan and I really like the idea of Marchenko – Hage – Demidov but I'm a bit weary of defensive play on that line. Demidov is ok defensively but not great, Marchenko tends to cheat here and there, and Hage so far has not impressed me with his defensive game.. the mix might be a let's say challenging at times.

  18. Marco is right that Utah has the best assets to trade for Marchenko it's just that I can't imagine Marchenko in a Mammoth uniform šŸ˜‚. The head and the name doesn't jive with the jersey haha

  19. D'Amico has no idea what he's talking about. If a new guy comes in and makes an egregious amount of money more than the rest that took discounts, it will absolutely cause strife. Marchenko can make 10-10.5 and it would be fine, but if he gets something like 14? Big time problems. Listen to any podcasts with people that actually played the game.
