good assessment. Historically it seems like the offseason is more prone to hockey trades where teams are trying to establish their roster for the upcoming season. Where-as during the season closer to the trade deadline it is more prone to trades for futures where teams have made a decision on where the season is going.
Peterson knees are busted up. Hes not half the player he was a few years ago. I wouldn't take him if uou pay me.

If Hughes is willing to overpay and the deals still aren't getting done then there's not much they can do other than stay the course and trust that the right opportunity will present itself at some point.
Told you before Marco…. Vancouver will have to swallow about half of Pettersson's salary to move him.

The team I don't understand why they are not rebuilding is the Rangers…
When you look at the west, I understand teams like the Kings not to go into rebuild right now because there are multiple other bad teams in the west so it's a battle finishing last with the likes of Vancouver, Calgary, Seattle, Chicago, Nashville(?), etc.
The eastern conference will likely again be really strong and not a single team is in rebuild mode (last year's bad teams have a high capacity to rebound.. Toronto, New Jersey)… meaning a "rebuilding" Rangers would not only almost be guaranteed finishing last in the east… but maybe in the league since they would get wrecked by the 15 other eastern teams which they'd face 50 times.
What about Xhekaj + 2nd round pick + B prospect for Zach Whitecloud?
They better be patient, not make stupid trade and overpay. Don't trade Hage, Zharovsky, Reinbacher, Brickford…Unless it gives you a really good 23-6 year old player that you will sign long term
As amazing as the Habs rebuild has been managed (and it's been managed to near perfection), the timing of it has been absolutely dreadful. In their one and only year drafting 1st overall, it was one of the weakest draft years in recent history (love Slaf, but not a generational talent). This summer has about the worst crop of UFAs I've ever seen. And the whole timing of the cap going up couldn't have come at a worse time for a team looking to unload their fully stocked cupboards of prospects like Habs are. Not to mention Habs doing much better than expected, sooner than than expected, forcing the fans to want to see moves made sooner than originally scheduled.
I'm perfectly fine with Hughes overpaying a LOT for a star player that they really want & need – it's the whole reason why Habs players are all taking the team friendly discount, specifically to get an overpaid player. But I'm also willing to wait and have them do next to nothing, because NEXT year is the year to strike. That was always the schueduled plan. TONS of elite UFA talent, Habs will have TONS of cap space, lots of Habs contracts expiring, and several significant star prospects will be available to make the move to the big team.
The timing's been brutal so far. But next year has the potential to fix just about everything.
The further along the Habs rebuild goes, the more particular acquisitions get, it's a "not just any 2C", but a player that's age specific, a fit in the room, a fast player, smart enough to get onboard quickly etc etc. When they land the guy, IF they are even able to, it'll be a big deal. I so trust the management, I'm not concerned even if we have to wait, the prospects are great. thx

What is everyone talking about with Montreal and their window being open? Hey if we never got the Wildcard and suppose we were dumped in the second round we will all still be happy with the rebuild no? There are at least a half a dozen names who are not planned to be engraved on the Cup and a half a dozen of our "untouchable" prospects have yet to play a game for the Habs. We are not in any desprate need to overpay or give up are future for another possible run. I think the Habs are going to stand pat and wait for our prospects and that big slamdunk everyone is waiting for is when Hughes signs McJesus at a discount!
Nobody has even mentioned this but the NHL landscape will change all this no movement when another one or even two more expansion teams are brought into the league. The NHL cannot continue to allow disruptions in player movements like this just because of a build up of good/better prospects so Bittman will have to address this in collective bargaining agreements to stop recurrences of this stalemate that we see right now.
Habs have quietly had the best offseason in the league….that demidov signing and keeping their powder dry is the best moves of the summer.
A trade will present itself at some point during the year, at a time where only a team like the habs with their assets can pull off.
There is no ways to get guaranteed championships.. having a successful/competitive team is as good as fans and management could hope for…. Kent has set himself up to consider any options available as they become available.. we currently are considered a top 5ish team in the league, that doesn’t mean that where we will stay but for the time being making a move just because might leave you handcuffed if when something more important comes up.. I have no reason to think the current roster cant make the playoffsthis year.. its basically the exact same group that won the first 2 rounds last season..
So the Canadiens are looking for that which is not obtainable. What's plan B?

I think the fans are losing patience because we see the trades happening, the trades that we could’ve done, like the McTavish for 2 1st or the Mavrik Bourque for a 2nd.. Hoglander for a 3rd, the Dorofeyev for 2 1st and a 3rd

I am not following this we have to make a trade to "level up" thing at all. The Habs leveled up last season simply by fixing the goaltending problem, tightening the defense some, and getting a year of experience deep into the playoffs (way more than expected, and with a bit of luck). The had three rookies last year (Demidov, Dobes, Kapanen) and two second-year players (Hutson, Bolduc), and are bringing potentially five more rookies in this year (including Fowler, Reinbacher and/or Engstrom, Xhekaj and/or Beck, and then Hage and Zjarovsky in April). We have a new coach (Lalonde) that can help our defense and PK, with a proven track record. We have guys like Hutson and Demidov on the ice every day, and inviting players who are not even here yet to join them. One more year of this is leveling us up. Jayzuz F Kaboodle on a Cracker, calm down. Everything is going to be OK.
I think the best time to make a trade now will be in November. Let some of these teams realize that their roster sucks and need to collect assets.

I thought he habs would try and get guys like Giroux, Tarasenko or marchment on a team friendly contract. But I wouldn’t overpay for anybody. The Habs are in such a good spot, no need to make a move.
Overpay Mantha to take a one year contract. Nothing else is interesting.
Next summer was always going to be the big one with all vet contracts done. Also all their young potential trade assets will hopefully be at their max value. Patience.
They need to make an offer sheet. Trades are not happening. Get with it Hugo. Adjust to the recent landscape. It's your job.
Costs are too high. Players are resigning. There are always GM's willing to do stupid things. I said it after the draft that I don't see the Habs making a major move until the deadline. They will probably grab an extra forward and I think Beck and Flojak get ample opportunity, but I don't see a top 6 move happening now. Hopefully Beck and Flojak can round out the bottom 6 with size and physicality. On D, Reinbacher will also get ample opportunity.

Noticed there's an increase of noob fans that have very outdated ideas on trades (even if they might be remotely competent). The standard noob fan react too much to a current game and throw everyone under the bus so their opinion is not remotely trustworthy. They cannot think long-term at all and think that the 1970s dynasty could be replicated (Note that is now 50 years ago).
Prices were too high so hughes pivoted to waiting , Montreal has time on its side , even if you keep this team exactly the same going into the season ,you got very high end players on the way . Let's see what we have in reinbacher . Montreal is doing this right , no rush lots of time .
I honestly think that no other team will have a better season than the Habs in the Atlantic. We will be beyond 110 points in next April.
So if Kent can't find a partner to dance this summer, I hope he waits as long as possible through the next season to find his top 6 winger or right shutdown defenseman.

I gotta think there will be opportunities once the season is underway (around the American Thanksgiving). I do remember that back in the 90's, when Savard was our GM and he made trades, other teams had to contend with "Serge pricing"! 😂
You've gotta trade talent to get talent in a situation like this.
We have a glut of LDs. Everyone talks about trading Struble, Xhekaj, Engstrom. What if, instead, we traded a guy like Matheson or Guhle? Yes, I know they're good. Yeah, we'd miss them. But you have to trade talent to get talent. It's not because we don't want them. It's because we have guys like Xhekaj and Engstrom sitting their waiting for ice time.
