Down and out, or just down for now?

1. In my opinion , Monty is what they needed at the time , Price leaving G sucked ,D collapsed ,and well the team in general just sucked ..Reset… a ton of offence , a ton of D ( if they would just Arby play his own game ) call ups out the ass and all of a sudden Monty shows what he was all along a sub par G with an ok game , why call up guys from the system ??? because we have better in the stew and Jeff and Kent knows what is cooking to win a cup within the next 2 years

2. Many fans fall in love with a player and can’t leave go. It is like an investor who falls in love with a stock that is losing money. They hope it will bounce back. Players on a team are like a stock portfolio. If you are a good investor you get rid of the losing player. This is what the Habs are doing.

3. He's still a younger man. He's made some money, has a family and I consider that success. The off season may present an opportunity for him to get his game back (without extreme pressure) but once a Hab, always a Hab.

4. habs is at a moment in the season where it can't afford mistakes like the one monty does. goals on the first shot is a must NO. the atlantic division is a mess and every win counts a lot right now. I hope he can find a place (mtl or not) where he can be at his full potential again

6. You are right about soft goals being demoralizing to the team, unless you are Patrick Roy who was infamous for letting pucks in from shots beyond the blueline.
   Whiskey, I wish Dobes got some respect. To say he played "adequately" against the Leafs is kind of belittling. He does lead the team in wins and the Habs would be in a better position in the standings if had played the games Monty was given to get him started.

7. Yes Both Goalies have had a tough time, But our defence have hung them out to dry they had a double save on break away (2 different players) a little bit of help on the back end Maybe a little less offence from the D …

8. Personally I always found Montembeault to be lackluster. He's always been really easy to rattle, never looking comfortable in the net. For him I think it's all a head game. He has the skill but he gets in his own head. This is NOT a good thing for a goaltender. It's not like he was a number 1 pick. We got him on waivers. That's a great pickup… but lets be honest we aren't going to get anywhere with a number one goalie that we picked up off waivers. People are expecting too much from him. People only care because Montreal historically has a great tradition of goaltenders…. not everyone is a Price, Huet, Thedodore, Thibault, who were all undoubtably number 1's in a post Roy era. We have been spoiled for decades. It hasn't been since the early 80s that the Canadiens have had a big question mark about goaltending.

10. Monty reminds me of Jocelyn Thibault. More than enough chances to prove himself.

11. Ok he is more than likely a very good guy but this is the NHL, He's gotten many chances, send him to Laval because the menage a trois is a distraction for the team on their run to the playoffs.

12. Monty has a hard struggle but he totally fell apart this season. he had starting goalie in the bag but did he not train properly during the off season..seems like he was not in the groove…sadly it may be time 4 him to move on.

13. The team is in a hard spot. They're remodelling the team culture into something more positive, more supportive and more flexible than the uber-traditional organization they used to be. You have the coach saying that the human is more important than the player. Management saying they're looking at character just as much as talent. If at the first sign of trouble they just toss a player aside, it's all going to seem pretty hypocritical.
    So… they've been super patient with Monty and gave him as many opportunities as they could. And that was the right thing to do!
    But…
    This is a playoff race. The time for chances is over.
    Sorry.
    I don't know why he broke, or how he can fix himself, but a playoff race is not the time or place to figure it out.

14. I’ve done a complete 180 on Montembault. I was all in when we were seeing the 3 goalie rotation. I thought he was the best option of the 3 with a bright future. But while the team’s philosophy has moved from “hopeful” to “expected,” Monty has failed to keep up, and it is time to move on. If he flourishes elsewhere, it does not mean it was wrong to move on from him now. You can’t focus on the playoffs while trying to develop JV players.

16. Sadly it seems that the most clear need of sports psychology is for goalies. Once they get bad mojo in their heads….ouffff!

17. Time to trade Monty, Josh figure skating Anderson, Dach, Aber for good right defensman or pick. Reduce time for our leader Gally but we need his spirit. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

18. Sorry man, I just don't agree with you on him at all. The only "stat" that makes him look even remotely good is the incredibly flawed GSAx. There are so many variables with this made up stat and I'm so tired of it completely replacing every other goalie stat and being the only thing that anyone ever uses to rate a goalie's skill anymore. There was a short time last season where he strung together a few good games and the rest of his career has been mediocre or just bad. The only reason he went to 4 Nations, where he was still the 3rd goalie, is because Canadian goaltending is the worst it's probably ever been in the history of the game and there just weren't any other good options. I don't wish the guy any ill will, I just really hope I never have to watch him play another game for us again.

19. I agree. At this point in the season you just can’t rely on him, and with only 20 games left it’s too risky. We could end up missing the playoffs.

    I’m still a big fan of his, but he clearly needs to rebuild his confidence. Maybe even get his eyes checked or work with a sports therapist to get things back on track.

20. I think that maybe the best outcome (eventually) is for Montembault to play for a different NHL team in the months to come. Start fresh and hope for the best.

21. I've hated watching Monty struggle so much this season. I can't imagine how he must be feeling. I was hoping he would overcome whatever it is that's been affecting him. Seems less and less likely though as the end of the season approaches. 😕
    Hard not to be excited about the looks Fowler has given us though! I'm just hopeful for whichever netminder combo that gives us the most solid footing.

22. I didn't understand why Montembeault and Laine weren't moved at the deadline but now I think the Canadiens are holding the chips until the draft.

23. I don't want to sound mean or judgemental but I've noticed Monty seemed to have put on some weight. Anyone else notice that? Just a bit of extra space on his neck and chin. Again, not trying to shame anyone just thought he doesn't look like a professional athlete.

24. Monty is a likeable guy. Hard to not feel bad for him.

    I think a lot of us (fans and team etc) thought this would be his year, where he puts up the numbers he is capable of. I don't think anyone saw this big of a slip coming.

    Maybe being a new dad is too much and he's not getting the sleep he needs. Who knows. But I thank him for what he has done, and whether his future is here or elsewhere, I hope that next season is his best.

27. now idk how much truth there is behind this but ive heard monty got caught cheating on his wife and has been going tru a divorce/breakup and that's the reason for his bad season. just wondering if anyone knew if this was true or just smoke n mirrors?

28. Habs traded for an AHL Goalie today. Monty is on his way out.

29. I have felt really bad for him and ive just come to terms with – This just aint his year and THAT'S OKAY! Love him and ever since that injury last year he just hasnt been the same. I think next year he will be RIGHT back to where he was. Just needs that hard reset.

31. Let me start by saying I like Montembeault. He seems like a great person and human being. He's very similar in my eyes to Jake Allen who always had a team first mentality. I would like nothing more than to see Montembeault have success in Montreal. That said, even though he was very good in his time in Montreal and had to suffer through a rebuild, he is not playing anywhere close to a starter this season. His 8 games where he allowed a goal on the first shot of the game paints a picture of the season he's having. His stats are brutal. He ranks 78th in GAA and 75th in SV%.. He's got very similar stats to Binnington this season and look how the Blues are doing this season. Dobes ranked 51th in GAA and 54th in SV% which is not great but much better than Montembeault. Fowler in 11 games this season ranks 24th in GAA and 24th in SV%. The Habs have 18 games to play and are 5pts in a playoff spot. That equates to 2 losses and 1 OTL. If they want to remain inside looking out, they need to dress their best team and unfortunately for Montembeault, he's the odd man out. That's sports. If you struggle for too long, someone will take your spot. At least Montembeault adds depth to the club and if Dobes or Fowler can't play, he's their to play that spot. And if they win a cup this season, even though the odds are very low, his name will make it on that cup, yes?

32. Monty has never had a winning season or a playoff win. He has always been a bad goalie. Need to go forwards and get rid or Monty.

33. If only more Habs fans were like this man, instead of parasitic like Leaf fans. Montembeault is a great story and a great guy and the guys in the dressing room love him. Nobody can play goal in the NHL without confidence and the more the fans get on his case, the more his confidence is shaken. He's come back before and I believe he will again. Although Montreal has a history of success with young goalies in net for the playoffs, I don't think that recipe will work this time around, simply because the team doesn't defend as well as they did when Dryden and Roy came up. Montembeault is a critical ingredient, whether he is on the bench or on the ice because he's a veteran. I personally want him to come back stronger than ever and stick it right in the face of all the "fans" who wrote him off and had to be nasty in the process. Let the Toronto fans tear down their own team, we are better than that.

34. Yeah ..we all want the best for him ..but winning is what it's about ..so as you say time will tell ..I hope Sam has saved some of that ash for his retirement ..
