The offer sheet is structured to make it as difficult as possible for ANH to match. $85M is in signing bonuses, so you have to think about cash as well as cap. Some owners spend to the cap but don’t like to spend cash — see Jerry Jones waiting to sign guys until the last moment. Brière is betting the decision will be made by the owner, Samueli, not Verbeek. If Samueli declines to pay cash, as is his habit, it makes getting the offer through more likely.

25. Ross is wrong on this one. Cutter has massive leverage because him & his agent have history of holding out. Cutter could tank Anaheim season by holding for let’s say until December. My guess is Cutter will get similar deal & Anaheim will become unbalanced team going forward. Briere wins because he shows fans he is willing to go for it.

    It was worth it. If not Briere, some other GM would have made a huge offer sheet. It' just happens to be Briere.
    But I really hope by the Ducks matching it really screws with the other players contracts, or lack thereof.
