How the Canadiens Identified and Drafted Gleb Pugachyov

[00:00] — Introduction: Targeting a Hockey Unicorn

An overview of the modern NHL development landscape and why Co-Director of Amateur Scouting, Nick Bobrov, believes players who do the “heavy lifting” on the ice have become incredibly rare.

[01:10] — Phase 1: The Deep Shadow Scouting Operation

How Montreal’s pursuit began a year prior, starting with tracking the 2025 MHL playoffs and evaluating Pugachyov’s infectious character under the radar at Dan Milstein’s Goldstar combine in Florida.

[02:17] — Phase 2: Changing the Franchise’s Trajectory in Russia

Nick Bobrov and European scout Sergei Samsonov (Vanondo) brave intense logistical challenges to attend the Future Cup in November 2025. As the only two NHL scouts in the arena, it took exactly one devastating hit on shift one to seal Pugachyov’s fate as “their guy.”

[02:57] — Phase 3: The Tape and the Archetype

Director of Amateur Scouting Martin Lapointe reviews the game film and is completely blown away by Pugachyov’s raw power, grit, and defensive structure. Kent Hughes breaks down the internal projection for Pugachyov: a 6’3″, 200+ pound physical anomaly built in the mold of a true Tom Wilson archetype.

[04:22] — Phase 4: Burning the Phone Lines on the Draft Floor

As size-heavy panicking sweeps the first round of the 2026 draft, Montreal refuses to sit back at 28th overall. Details on how high Pugachyov was actually ranked on their internal board, and Kent Hughes’ relentless efforts to execute a trade-up.

[05:08] — Phase 5: The Trade and the War Room Reaction

The logistics of the trade with the Vegas Golden Knights (packaging the 28th pick and a 2027 3rd-rounder to jump to 26th overall). A look at the immediate, explosive celebration in the Canadiens’ war room when the target was officially sniped.

[05:48] — Conclusion: Looking for the “Oomph”

Why Montreal ignores public box-car scouts to prioritize playoff variance. Nick Bobrov defines the missing “oomph” that Pugachyov brings to the roster, and why the front office believes this physical culture-setter could be NHL-ready much sooner than expected.

  1. Well done video.
    Thanks. Great collection of clips.
I guess only time will tell with Gleb, as with all/most 18yo prospects. The Habs drafting 6 of 8 players 6'3" or taller tells you all you need to know about the holes Montreal are looking to reinforce.
I'd love to see what he does in a year with Laval.

Side note: I really like Laval's defensemen lineup this year.

  2. Is the Canadians ever want to send a message can you imagine on one line the two xhekaj Brothers Anderson stubble and the Russian ki..d no one's going to play with the Canadians no more and take runs at the goalie..

  3. This angers me as a life-long Habs fan. Marty has been ACTIVELY sabotaging every tough, gritty player that comes through the system ultimately benching them, skape-goating them or scratching them… actively trying to change their game to a softer version. Who in their right mind doesn't think he will do the same to this Gleb guy? I love MSL but he has a MJOR red flag here that is slowing this rebuild down, and in the meantime Xhekaj waits and waits for a contract extension. The disrespect is unreal.
