The Rebuild Is Over | Why Demers Likes Sharks Adding Nurse, Trouba & Marchment EP 133

The San Jose Sharks’ rebuild is over!

Hate it or love it, this is GM Mike Grier’s vision for a winning Sharks team: He signed Jacob Trouba and Mason Marchment to big deals, and traded for Darnell Nurse.

NHL Network’s Jason Demers shares his thoughts — also, read and watch more of Demers’s thoughts on the San Jose Sharks at The Bite:

  1. In 3 /4 years when we havent won a cup and can't pay the young guys their new contracts and have to trade them away, and take a step back in personnel, they will very much be saying negative things about those trades.
They should've taken care of celebrini and smiths contracts this year

  2. I have never been so mad at the sharks fan base. It is wild how casuals think they know how to GM and lose faith so fast in ours. People look at value of the player per $ spent because that is easy. Being a GM is not just looking at the economics. The fact is there were no good deals yesterday so the options are do nothing or use our resource that we have in abundance to make the team better. Grier did the right thing. 3-4 years from now there will be teams who want to improve by taking on a 1-2 year Trouba or Nurse. There is no downside here. Amazing day yesterday. Love GMMG through and through.

  3. Sheng when other people are talking : Interrupting non stop

Sheng when getting interrupted that one time : Hold on let me finish!

    insufferable human being

  4. If you think about we got nurse from oilers we got trouba from ducks we got tof from kings we got players from almost every team in our division that have knowledge on how those team work and how they can be beat.

  5. One thing I thought of, which I haven't heard others think about (though I'm only halfway through you video), is this gives a huge help in front of Askarov. This feels like giving him a real shot and chance to grow into the goalie we hope he'll become.

  6. Hilarious how emotional fans panic so easily. GMMG is deliberately building a balanced ‘playoff capable’ team. The notion of veterans blocking young players is silly. Prospects will get their play time when they have been assessed professionally to be ready. Fans crying out to give prospects playtime is literally just wishful thinking hoping they would perform. Player development is tricky otherwise every highly touted prospect is a superstar.

  7. Thanks for the discussion and fun. The contracts are expensive, but the addition physicality was needed in a big way. We won’t need to win games 6-5.

  8. Mike Greer signed veteran defensemen without trading away valuable assets. Would you want to trade Wil Smith, Sam Dickenson and two first round picks for Werinski?

  9. Truba is an intimidating defenseman. Nurse is a good big defenseman that negotiated a great yearly salary for himself. Big defensemen can protect the front of the net better than Mario Ferraro. And yes at the last years of their deals the vets can be traded to make room for the new young defensemen.

  10. People freaking out about the last year of the Nurse/Trouba contracts make me laugh because there will always be a rebuilding team that will take a one year cap dump for a mid-round pick.

  11. I am not concerned at all. Next 4 years we need to get our young players playoff experience so they understand what it takes. Once Macklin has that, I dont see a team he couldnt drag to a cup.

  12. Trust Grier and company sharks fans. Let's not panic. Let's also remember the money from couture is coming off the books. We had to reach the cap floor. But we got toughness to protect the youngsters.

  13. Really great podcasts guys. I loved JD breaking down why this make so much sense for the Sharks at this stage of their development. Sheng, you were very funny in this episode. Sheng and Z, you guys said you really like the moves that Greir made but don't love it. What could Greir done differently that would have made you love it? We would have to give up too much for Werenski and we are not ready as a team to fully utilize his talents.

  14. Why is there no discussion at all of Dickinson QBing the PP? Didn’t he score like the most points by a defensemen ever in his last season in London? That’s not an option? Obviously young and needs to improve, but like surely there’s something there

  15. The trades were good, I just didn't like giving up Muk but maybe there was competition and that's what it took. But Shea was available for cheaper too I think as a ufa, so idk what happened there. Money is a nonissue. We should have a better dcore than before which should be enough for playoffs. I don't see that much improvement in our rivals with Ducks defense looking thin, LA signing old men and seeing who survives, hoping Babcock babcock's. Everything is primed for us to be a sleeper team. Bold prediction? Conference finals.

  16. If I didnt know any better, the way the Sharks fans are reacting, one would think Mike Grier brought in a couple of serial killers. Wow!! Its crazy man. Sharks are going to be just fine.

  17. The problem with the Nurse and Trouba deals is not the money. It's the length of the contracts. These guys probably have two more good years in them. After that you might have very expensive bottom pairing d-men. Of course they may surprise me and not decline at all, but that isn't common. And how do you squeeze in the young d-men who should be ready by then?
