The NHL offseason just took a historic turn.
The Philadelphia Flyers have stunned the hockey world by signing Leo Carlsson to a massive $18 million AAV offer sheet, making the 21-year-old the highest-paid player in the NHL—for now. If the Anaheim Ducks match, it could completely reshape how teams negotiate with young stars for years to come.
In today’s Hot Take Hockey, we break down:
🏒 Why the Carlsson offer sheet changes the NHL forever
🏒 The impossible decision facing the Anaheim Ducks
🏒 How this impacts future contracts for Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, and other young superstars
🏒 Why offer sheets are suddenly becoming a legitimate weapon across the league
🏒 The latest on Shane Wright’s trade situation and why Seattle appears willing to listen
🏒 Dylan Larkin rumors and other potential offseason dominoes still to fall
With the salary cap rising, fewer elite players reaching unrestricted free agency, and general managers becoming more aggressive, this offseason may mark the beginning of a completely new era in the NHL.
Do the Ducks have no choice but to match? Would you pay Leo Carlsson $18 million per season? And where should Shane Wright end up if Seattle moves him?

Shane Wright, the next Alexandre Daigle.
The Ducks have to let him walk….♠️26♥️!
The Ducks don’t match, but instead negotiate to trade some of the picks back to Philly for players, picks. Yes, they can do that (see Chris Gratton). The deal ends up Tippett, Bonk, Bump, Toronto 2027 1st, Philly 2028 1st, Philly 2030 3rd. Yes, it’s a lot to give up but Briere gets his 1C and Verbeek saves face and gets assets that can help today.
Honestly, I do not believe in Shane Wright. If he is not in a top 6 role, he would surely fail. Matthews and Tavares are higher than him on depth.
shane wright just needs a change of scenery. he will bounce back
He's worth half that
Wright not going to Toronto.. u Toronto guys think u can get every player , fucking delusional fans/media..
What the hell are my stars gonna do?
Great move by Danny Big balls Briere, yeah it's a lot of $ , but by year 3 it's dropping to 15mil aav . Your paying short term to steal a player . Then by the time you have to sign Martone the cap goes up and the Carlsson aav dips .
NYR- schneider and first
Quinn is easily worth more than Shane Wright. Wright is a huge flop.
This is why phlly is trash, paying an unproven commodity more then McDavid. Risking 4 1st round picks and possible albatross contract for potential… at best Leo is a 80 point ppg center on a team with crap wingers.
Let him go take the four first rounds. He’ll never live up to the contract. They’re making a mistake by offering that much players in the past I’ve been offered these contracts and I don’t think one of them is looked up to it so bye.
Leafs arent trading for useless Wright
this big salaries are going to be the death of the nhl
This has been the most fun offseason I can remember.
i can see jack berglund getting a shot at making that roster as a 4C
Wright is a bust! And that front loaded contract hand cuffs the Ducks!
Are the trades done for the offseason or will there be more?
The trades have been slowing down these past few days, when will they pick up?
Shane Wright is useless
