I've never really been a fan of Nic. To me, he's an AHL player with an NHL shot. He's been given lots of chances to earn more ice time but never really improved. (1 more goal per year is not really improvement when his ice time kept going up). He'll never be a top 6 player IMO and he's too small and bad defensively to be a bottom 6.
As a Pens fan, he's a nice addition, likely on the third line. Can definitely see him becoming a folk legend in Pittsburgh where he comes to the organization, and ends up just going off. And, who knows. He might be enticing enough for his brother to okay a trade to Pittsburgh. The Pens are in a really, REALLY weird spot right now, where they've lost key guys from last year, but have a lot of cap space. And with the, less than optimal free agent market, this is a good way to add. And Dubas LOVES his buy low, change of scenery guys (see Chinakhov, Egor, or Brazzeau, Justin). It's a good move that'll add depth scoring, and he'll become a 20 goal scorer in Pittsburgh.
as an Avs fan, I am perfectly fine with the Central making absurd moves. Keep breaking the bank for 2nd pairing defensemen and trading guys that are over a point per game.
The time had long since come and gone. It's not for a lack of talent, but it was clear he didn't wanna be here anymore and, with how he was used, the Leafs didn't seem to that seriously want him anymore either. Honestly, the trade should have happened when he first requested a trade, he might have been halfway valuable then, but no one ever accused Brad Treliving of being a smart gm. Moving him now was just a bit of cleanup work for Chayka to get off the books.

Watch Pittsburgh actually play him and give him a shot on a scoring line, and I won't be surprised if he surpasses 60p next season

Robertson is going to be a twenty-goal and fifty point man next year. He'll clean up his defense a bit, but there have been worse plus/minus players on the leafs last year. Dubas got a bargain!

How are we going to get Jason Robertson to come to Toronto if Nicky Bobby is gone ? I agree with this trade because he is terrible Defensively. Some guys do well in the minors but when they hit the big leagues they never excel. Nicky bobby is just to small for the NHL.

To all the people saying “he scores this much with this little minutes, he’s so good.” He isn’t. He’s proven to consistently allow more than he provides. He’s god awful off puck, small, not overly quick, cannot defend himself, injury prone. He tries hard and accomplishes little. He’s destined to be a career AHL all star before he turns 30. We all see the shot, we believed in the potential. But he isn’t a useful player on a playoff team in the NHL. Not a fit for top 6 or bottom 6.
His future? Alex Nylander. That’s how he turns out.

This is unfortunate. He was probably the worse fumbling of development for the Leafs in the last 10yrs. I don't understand letting him lose like 2 years of development by refusing to send him to the Marlies.
Hope he can get/earn more icetime there. But i am not unhappy he is gone. I got a a little sad about the potential and not getting consistent results.
I wish Nick the best going forward. His early career was de-railed by injuries, and he was never able to figure out the defensive aspect of the game. Like Sandin, he wasn't properly developed here. I suspect his career in Pittsburgh will be fine.
