On the Spiegel & Holmes Show, CHGO host Jay Zawaski discussed the Blackhawks’ recent acquisition of defenseman Bowen Byram and the team’s direction. Zawaski took exception to the negative coverage from the national media of the Blackhawks’ trade of the No. 4 overall pick for Byram, detailing that the team needs to improve next season to show young star Connor Bedard that it can build a winner.

This was by far the smartest move of the NHL off-season. To trade 4OA in a very weak draft, for a TOP pairing D.. Whoever the Hawks drafted, wasn't going to be a Top 1D come October. They won't be here for 2-3 years, then another 2-3 years to get to Byram's level. Byram is the Brian Campbell for this run.. He does so much to make this team better today.. and 3 years from now.
BLACKHAWKS will top 80 points (before the UFA signing period) If they grab a couple solid players , 90 points?

What a joke. They flipped Jay from what he said right after the trade happened. Someone must’ve reminded Jay who butters his bread as local podcaster. Nat’l press CAN BE MORE HONEST when not BEHOLDEN to 1 team. They gave BUF A+ & CHI D- Sure Hawks need help. Sure line is young, cant stay at bottom, yadda-yadda. Doesn’t change the fact that DAVIDSON/Wirtz FAILED not creating attractive team last couple years. Why are SJS and others so far ahead when they started their rebuild at the same time. Maroon&Brodie!?!…Grelczyk&Burakowsky!?! All those trades Kyle missed this cuz he created an unattractive culture. We wasted years not infusing w true, $$$ talent to surround the youth.
The reason the Blackhawks have had so many "high draft picks" is that they have finished at the BOTTOM of the league for 5 years. And Davidson has done NOTHING SIGNIFICANT TO ADD TO THE ROSTER IN THAT TIME. And is there ANY CHANCE that the Blackhawks will pursue Jason Robertson – who is a PERFECT FIT – age-wise, talent-wise, and position-wise. They CERTAINLY have the cap space – and ALL THOSE YOUNG PLAYERS & DRAFT PICKS for a trade. My belief is that DAVIDSON SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED ALREADY – LIKE 2 YEARS AGO!! And if he DOESN'T at least make an OFFER for Robertson, he should be fired IMMEDIATELY after that decision is made!!!
I was immediately happy with the trade. I couldn't understand why everyone was crying and bitching. We got a solid defenseman that's still young. We lost nothing in the trade. This pushes us into the playoff race
