Could the Bruins Actually Trade for Darnell Nurse?

The trade winds keep blowing, and the newest player linked to the Boston Bruins is Darnell Nurse. Nurse has requested a trade out of Edmonton and has listed Boston as one of the destinations he is willing to go to. Nurse has been the go to player the fan base in Edmonton likes to blame for losses, so having Boston on your list, Darnell, is a choice.

In this video, I’m going to break down what type of player Darnell Nurse is, why he is asking for a trade out of Edmonton, where he would fit in with the Boston Bruins, what it would cost to acquire him, and, finally, the chances it even happens.

  1. Great breakdown! It is tempting, but as you said we need a right shot d more. If we trade for him we would still need to be able to fit at right d under the cap. So if they retain 2,5 and we send them like a 1st, Mittlestadt, Brunet and maybe Cooper Simpson or Will Zellers it could work. There would still be a little room for a decent right d.

  2. The Bruins need to cut bait on some players. Is Lohrei going to improve in year 4? I think we know what we get from Lohrei. Pro teams that stick with guys for too long that have a ceiling always end up at a loss. You've seen the guy. He's played 3 years. He's not going to take another jump. Move on. Trade the player and improve the position. I'm a fan of an NFL team that has been bad for a while. They held onto players for 4byrsts because they were higher draft picks. They never owned out. Now in Another rebuild. Separate the player the facts from the feelings and the ifs

  3. 9.2 Million for 24 points, ouch. Fresh start is probably a good idea. Too much money for the Bruins to take on.
Unless they would retain some salary or take on a contract in return, I'd pass.

  4. I really like Nurse, but that contract is a killer. I agree that if Edmonton absorbs some of that contract then I think he would be a perfect fit into Boston system.

  5. I wouldn’t mind if the Bruins got Nurse. I think a fair compromise would be if Edmonton retained $3 million per year. At the very least $2 million.
    Or Elias Lindholm for Nurse.
But simply getting Nurse with no salary retention or without dumping salary, then absolutely not. I’d rather have the bruins sell all their draft picks and prospects to Columbus for Werenski and sign him to a $15m/year deal.
$9m is just too much money for Nurse. Absolutely cannot rationalize paying him $9 million per year. There are better options.

  6. Court, Don & Cam are gonna be drooling over that left side with Nurse & he could really help Charlie. Unlocking him. 25% is a good number. id say 50-50 they can sign a older RH Defense too

  7. I don't think it necessarily needs to be Lindholm as a return to EDM. I can imagine the swap to be Nurse for Korpisalo, Mitts and/or Eyssimont. It would still make more sense for the return package to the EDM to be cheaper than Nurse's contract, otherwise there is no point for EDM to do that trade. But just getting rid of Korpi and one more contract should be enough, if this would be the only other move they would be willing to do. Nobody is taking Elias, especially after the presser from Sweeney. Our only hope is LTIR since his back issues are probably never going away.

  8. This one is not that difficult to assess. Darnell Nurse may be a good defenseman although he is obviously not what the Bruins need, right defenseman rather than another left defenseman. Also he is 31 yrs old – not a younger defenseman who can grow with the Bruins over the next several years. He is Brandon Carlo part 2 – albeit 2 years older. The biggest problem with him is his overblown contract for the next 5 years. For a team who is looking at pending contract negotiations for a number of players, Zacha, Arvidsen and, in the near future, Minten. Even if the Oilers were to retain, at least, 2.5 million per year of his ongoing contract this salary still puts a strain on the Bruins cap. Edmonton would have to accept Korpisalo as part of the trade and retain at least 2 million of Nurse's salary for the Bruins to even consider a trade. In addition, Zacha should be verboten as regarding a possible trade piece to Edmonton.
