Former NHL head coach and current Philadelphia Flyers Assistant Coach Todd Reirden joins Bill Matz and Charlie O’Connor of the PHLY Flyers Podcast to discuss Philly’s selection of defenseman Maksim Sokolovskii in the NHL Draft, explaining why the organization believes the young blueliner has rare upside and intriguing long-term potential.
Reirden breaks down Sokolovskii’s skating ability, hockey IQ, defensive instincts, and the traits that made him stand out to the Flyers’ scouting staff. He also shares how the team plans to help develop the promising prospect as he begins his professional journey.

He's rare because he's 240lbs at 17…way to much at that age..he'll be 270lbs trying to play..no way
Todd doing a phenomenal job being a conduit for the Jamie Drysdale break-tf-out đđ
Mushy Middle Brent Flahr
Iâm waiting for all of the Basement Mafia Experts, that never did more than public skating sessions to come out of hiding and tell us he doesnât know what heâs talking about & itâs another wasted pick. Hughes, Williams & others, come on tell us the way it really is you butt wipes.
Hopefully he can be another Matthew Barnaby.đđâźď¸
When its all said and done the 6th player in draft 22 will have a better career than the 5th player in that draft.
Flyers drafts are terrible. They need major change in the scouting department. Painful but expected. Low team draft grades from all around. I do like Brek though!
I would not waste time basing your show on what Jo Smo thinks about a pick. The reality is drafting 17/18 year olds is a craps shoot. Letâs hope Sokolovskii turns into a shut down stud! Heâs not playing in the NHL the next 2 years. It could be 5 years. If he turns into a stud when heâs 22, after 1 more year in OHL and 3 years playing college hockey at Maine, than weâll be excited to proclaim what a pick!
Size matters!!!! Wilson, zadorov, kastelic, bertuzzi, mantha…..
Big guys manhandle little guys!
great info from Todd.
The Flyer are just shooting themselves in the foot by drafting projects and thinking theyâre smarter than the consensus I got news for you, Theyâre not! By drafting projects they are guaranteeing that none of these prospects are going to have real trade value unless they actually hit it in the NHL because they have zero cachet. They were drafted much higher than they shouldâve been drafted players like Luchanko , Nesbitt, and now this big defenseman. Contrast that with the stock pile of high picks and consensus players that San Jose is drafting if youâre a team looking to trade a superstar that wants out who are you gonna trade with the flyers or San Jose? Itâs not even close. This is what the flyers donât understand is that the value prospects is not necessarily that they make it hitting NHL is that they have the cachet that makes other teams want them before they even make it to the NHL.
I think Todd Reirden is an amazing coach. He did a fantastic job w Drysdale & I canât wait to see what he does w Jiricek & Bonk.
Charlie really is a rat. This dude talks bad about Maksim to appease the twitter fans and then kisses the feet of the people who actually know enough to hold him accountable. He goes wherever the wind takes him. He knows literally nothing about draft prospects and it shows. Dude is a typical Philly media bozo, run by Comcast, and takes the direction of his handlers very well. You don't get this kind of access to players and coaches unless you're greasing their wheels. Rat behavior
I hated the pick but now that I had time to think it over, at 27 you were drafting a guy with a high bust rate either way so if this player becomes any sort of NHL player thats already a win given the drafting spot. Bottom 10 picks usually dont have a ceiling past a 3rd line Forward or 3rd pair D
If there's any chance of getting Ghost back that could fix the Power Play and get a whole lot more shots on goal.
Reminds me of Sam Morin a previous 6'7'' flyers first round defensemen bust
All the armchair liberal analytical GMâs who are âfansâ donât know what theyâre talking about or how to build a hockey team. Itâs frustrating reading their comments and hilarious at the same time
