Michael Kesselring TRADED for a trade-up in the 1st round by the Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres first trade of the offseason is sending Michael Kesselring to the San Jose Sharks for a trade-up in the 1st round! Jarmo Kekäläinen moves up from the 27th pick to the 20th pick of the 1st round. It sounds like something valuable, but a closer look at the history of the end of the 1st round shows it’s a marginal difference between the two. The trade is more about not wanting to pay Kesselring or go to arbitration with him this offseason. Both Josh Doan in the trade, and Mattias Samuelsson in the role made Kesselring expendable. What went wrong for Kesselring? Injuries are a huge story of his season and it felt like he never fully recovered before losing the trust of Lindy Ruff and his role to several depth defensemen. There is good reason to believe that Kesselring will play far better in San Jose.

Plus, an update on Connor Hellebuyck points to Winnipeg’s willingness to trade him, and trade demands that fit almost perfect for what the Sabres would have to offer. If the Jets want a second line center, which one fits in the deal?

  1. Sabres in elite company in the east, time to go bold and make a statement with some moves. Canes not going anywhere, habs on a rise, TB still very competitive and Florida returning.

  2. I just don’t understand why this is the first move. I know the draft is coming up… but I think all the points you made about him being injured and look how Sammuellson had a bounce back. I would have given him another year. The trade itself is fine. I’m just surprised it took our 27th and Kess to move up 7 places. Again… I’m not a draft expert but fine. Also… can we please stop talking about Robert Thomas. When we attempted a trade when St. Louis was rumored to be open… that fell through and then we tried to get Parayko… that fell thru. Let’s move on.

  3. Sammy's bounce back if anything would have me hesitant to trade Kesselring. Sammy had injuries and putrid play for multiple seasons while Kess had one injury-plagued season and played very well on Arizona/Utah in prior years. We sold low on a guy that potentially could have made our stacked defense even more ridiculous if he recovered health-wise. If he was making a gigantic stink about how the year had gone or made outrageous asks for his contract or ice time, then oh well. But otherwise, this wasn't great asset management.

  4. Shocking how little the Sabres got in return for this 26 yr old defenseman, who was brought in under/ the thought of having “middle pair” potential.

Even if his relationship w/ the team was completely fractured and the club was just “done”… it’s still wild that Jarmo couldn’t find a better return somewhere else around the league.

Kesselring & the Sabres 2nd rd pick, for SJ’s 20th overall feels like return that we should have sought.

  5. Brother your stats are mistaken. The move from #27 to #20 is a difference of pick #45. Which means #20 is worth #27 and #45. Also the vast difference of pick #20 and #27 in this years draft is the possibility of getting Adam Novotny(LW), Nikita Klepov (LW), Ilia Morozov (C) or Tommy Bleyl (D). Who may be available at #20 but will not be at #27. For example, Robert Thomas (St Louis) was pick #20.

  6. I think the real return.. yeah, they moved up 7 spots in the draft..but they also freed up space under the cap. We still have Benson, and a few others to sign (assuming that tuch is being allowed to walk.. moreso since re-signing him probably chewed the entire cap).. they still have Dahlin, Samuelsson, Power, Byram and Timmins so they only really need 1 D-Man out of Johnson, Metsa, Mrtka, and UFA's Stanley and Schenn… the D-Core was a place where they can move from. I think that cap space and the fact we're deep means he was expendable and they improved their lottery ticket.. I would have liked to see him without injuries… but I can live with this deal.

  7. I hate the thought of trading any of the 4 top defensemen, the number one priority for Jarmo should be too try and get better without breaking that top 4 up, If you trade Byram who plays with Power? Timmons? Power really found his stride this year and I think that's BC of Byram being so good they got comfortable together, Dahlin Sammy and Power alone is still great but then your bottom 3 drop off is major, we spent most of the season barely being able too play our 3rd line D pair and you're telling me we'd go into next year with even one less guy….don't sign me up for that, even if it is too get a great goalie like Hellebuyck, Jarmo needs too find a way too make the team better without breaking up that top 4, It's the Sabres super power right now and should be very very low on the totem pole as far as "options" too get better. We've got plenty of mid players, draft picks and high end prospects, too get shit done without messing up our Defense. Other teams don't just trade away their best players for other good players, they find ways too acquire great players and keep their best players, that's what Jarmo needs too do.

  8. Best wishes to him. He never wanted to be a Sabre. The move makes sense for both. Package the 20th , skinner buy out and UPL for a 6 pack of sock type.

  9. I feel that the Buffalo Sabres aren't done with trades. I can see them moving McLeod, another player and a draft pick for an impact player. Maybe Kyrou, Thomas, Larkin or Hischeir. I think there is a strong possibility of that happening.

  10. If the Sabres trade Ostlund or Helenius as part of a package for Hellebuyck it will go down in history as one of the worst Sabres trades. I don't trust Jarmo as far as I can throw him.

  11. Part of me was excited to see him healthy, paired with somebody on the 3rd pairing……….i think he is a valuable defensemen who just had a bad injured year…….

So they trade him. I’m assuming, maybe, Jarmo has a plan and maybe this higher 1st round pick plays a roll?

As long as they get rid of Greenway – don’t buy him out. Trade him with a 3rd or maybe a 2nd.

And as long as they sign benson…..

And as long as they do not trade Helenius or Ostlund…….

And if any forwards get traded it’s between; Norris, Zucker and maybe Quinn……..even though I like them and don’t have a problem with them per se……

And they don’t trade Mrtka or Kleber…….highly rated young defensemen…..

And maybe trade Johnson and Strebek if needed…..

And if it’s required for a really fantastic trade – Kulich can be involved…….

…..LOL those are my parameters. Haha just…..follow my rules Jarmo

  12. Going from 27 and helping out a disgruntled Kesselring was a decent move going up to Draft 27 upgraded to number 20 moving up could be the difference it could also day to other NHL teams that holds a value at number 20 there are other NHL teams Jarmo Keakolainen could trade his 20 to nhl teams that might need it more could be beneficial if Buffalo Sabres Climb even further up the Draft Ladder 🪜 the closer they are to scouting # 1 center men in this years Draft Jarmo Keakolainen can not afford to use Draft pick #20 to meet Buffalo Sabres need and hit on the that trade I think Jarmo Keakolainen has the general manger experience to Draft a centermen with some fire power & winning percentage this draft!
