  1. 18:20 if 1,2,3 is McK,Stenberg,Reid the Hawks should absolutely take Malhotra. It’s honestly the best Stenberg consolation prize they could get. Hawks want Bedard Frondell and Nazar down the middle. But both Nazar and Frondell are probably better as a winger. Landing Malhotra puts one of those as a top six winger. And… Moore is developing real nice. He should be a quality 3C. So you get Bedard Malhotra and Moore down the middle with Nazar Frondell Kantserov and probably Bertuzzi as Top 6 wingers. That probably gets the core in place. Add a star player as a UFA next time one is available and that’s a competitive forward group.

  2. Byram is one concussion away from potentially having to retire. He's also not good defensively, while being decent offensively. All-together, he's not a top-pair Dman. A 10+ million long term deal would be regrettable.

  3. Cool write-up. Hope you do more. What do you make of this very detailed breakdown of Fehervary falling off a cliff analytically when not playing with Carlson last year? It's russianmachineneverbreaks and YT doesn't like it being linked to.

"Fehervary was effectively a top-pairing defender for the Capitals all season, skating 498 minutes with John Carlson before Carlson’s trade to Anaheim. That’s a tough gig: big minutes partnered with an offensive defender with obvious shortcomings without the puck. That pairing was a tremendous success: 32 Caps goals to 17 for opponents. Whether it was a synergy of skills or whatever else, Marty-Carly worked."

In the 399 minutes Fehervary played without Carlson, the Caps controlled 43.6 percent of the shot attempts and got outscored 31 goals to 22. This is the important context for Fehervary because it’s the one more like his future. He played with everyone down the stretch: McIlrath, Roy, Sandin, so it’s hard to isolate anything in that performance. We can just say it’s bad, and then worry for what next season will bring.

Fehervary signed a big extension last year, and I’m scared for what follows. Away from the lightning rod of criticism that was John Carlson, Fehervary might get exposed. He needs to evolve his game."
