The New Jersey Devils are entering a pivotal offseason following a disappointing 25-26 NHL campaign, described by Zach Berman as a “campaign from hell.” With a new general manager and front office in place, expectations are sky-high to not only return to the playoffs but to start laying groundwork for a Stanley Cup run. One major immediate challenge is the status of goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Despite his full no-movement clause not expiring until July 1st and a sizable contract in place, there are reports that other teams have shown interest in acquiring Markstrom, with Florida being a speculative suitor, especially as their own goaltending situation is in flux.
Zach raises the critical issue of how the Devils would replace Markstrom if a trade materialized. Backup Jake Allen isn’t considered a full-season solution, and prospects like Nico Dawes may not be ready for an elevated role. The goaltender free-agent market also appears thin, and potential trade options, such as Connor Hellebuyck, would be pricey in terms of both assets and cap space. Accordingly, any move off Markstrom must be paired with a clear and viable plan for securing reliable goaltending—a scenario Zach stresses as essential before making any decisions.
The podcast also delves into contract speculation around Devils captain Nico Hischier. According to Sunny Mehta, a medium-term extension in the $11-13 million range appears likely, reflecting both the rising cap and the fact that the team hasn’t won enough to justify a team-friendly deal. There’s a sense that Hischier’s continued presence in New Jersey may hinge largely on the change in GM leadership, and that player retention in general will become more challenging unless the Devils start winning consistently.
Finally, Zach reflects on the lessons the Devils can learn from the Carolina Hurricanes, recent Stanley Cup winners. The Hurricanes’ success—built on analytics, cap flexibility, aggressiveness in transactions, and organizational alignment—offers a blueprint for the Devils under Sunny Mehta’s stewardship. emphasizes the need for a smarter, more adaptable front office and a focused, winning culture as critical for closing the gap between the Devils and perennial contenders like Carolina.

Only a dumb GM would take Markstrom. Devils are stuck with him until 2028 sadly. They need to model the Canes and Knights cup runs or it'll be the same old team
Should deal allen and let markstrom trabsition to a mentor role back up for a younger goalie to develop unless mehta can pull off some magic for marky + 1st rounder for a game changer
We are not a contender with or without Markstrom, UFA market is shallow, 10 mil Alex Tuch is not gonna fix devils. There is no need to pay to get rid of Markstrom. you can win a cup with an average goalie, you can win with Markstrom, and you can certainly make the playoffs with him.
my point: just don't pay to move the contract.
We have 2 good goalies, just a coach who makes bizarre decisions. He brought Markstrom back from injury way too early on more than one occasion and consistently overplayed him even when Allan was on top form.
Contrast with Rod Brind'Amour who, without hesitation, continued with the inexperienced Bussi.
Get rid of Timo, Hammy and Marky. That frees up a ton for actual talent
If there's no deal out there to bring in an affordable quality goalie who can be a true #1, and there's really not much chance for that to happen, then might as well bring up Daws and let him amd Allen be the tandem this season. Can Daws take the next step? This would be his only chance to prove it and with Marky being hit or miss every season, where is the harm in replacing him with a youngster who may get the same record at a cheaper cost? As always, if the defense can step up then the goal8es don't have to be amazing. They just have to be consistent and stable.
It’s not gonna be the same dull team to the shmucks in the commentary. Sunny Mehta is a young GM moving on from Data Analyst and AGM in Florida to Bill Zito to being a very good GM that gets this team to compete and restores respect, honor, and glory again in NJ
Markstrom showed promise in the playoffs, it's just about the devils getting there. And with no scoring to make up for Marky's blunders…
The New Jersey Devils need to concern themselves, not with making the playoffs, but beating Carolina once they get there.
The Devils better not do another rebuild!
