Could the Montreal Canadiens pull off one of the biggest trades of the offseason?
In this video, we take a deep dive into Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish and examine whether he could be a realistic trade target for Kent Hughes and the Canadiens. With reports of significant league-wide interest in the young power forward, could the Habs be among the teams exploring a blockbuster deal?
We discuss why McTavish would be such an intriguing fit in Montreal, how he could help address the Canadiens’ long-term need down the middle, and whether his age, skill set, and physical style make him an ideal addition to the team’s young core.
Most importantly, what would it actually cost the Canadiens to acquire him? Would Anaheim demand a top prospect, a first-round pick, or even an NHL roster player in return? We break down several potential trade scenarios and debate whether the price would be worth paying.
Would you make a move for Mason McTavish if you were Kent Hughes?
Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

people said Mctavish is slow…people said Mark Stone is slow..i saw him skate at 31 km/h in the final…I think Mctavish is exactly what we need
Elias Pettersson 30% retained to the Habs for 2026 1st, Kapanen and Engstrom
Just wait for a better deal I say. I really don't see the interest in rushing for a 3rd center as your 2nd.
Knies – McTavish – Demidov…
Is that good enough?
I actually think the most likely move is a Pettersson for Gallagher + trade. Too much money for too much money so neither team retains. I know people will be hesitant because Pettersson might not be able to handle Montreal, but he could potentially thrive. Suzuki – Caufield – Slaf – Hage – Demidov – Pettersson is oozing talent. We would have to toughen up and get heavier through the rest of the lineup. Not an ideal move, but a way to get more talent without sacrificing all our assets.
I understand submitting offer sheets to RFA’s is frowned upon and could end up making you some enemies but the list of elite RFA centermen is pretty crazy this summer.
Fantilli and Carlsson are both top knotch candidates to play with Ivan and would solve the 2c issue for the next decade and could eventually play as 1rst centerman further down the road.
If we had one of those two, then Hage becomes expendable and could be used as a trade asset to get a top 4 d-man to play with Hutson.
I would offer either Fantilli or Carlsson 11 million for 8 years and see what happens.
Hi Marco. I have one concern about mctavish and i want your point of vue. Do you think mason have a real problem of speed because many analyst talk about that
Pass in McTavish, red flags
Mason is a big boy, but not who the HABS need. He is not a right shot center, his past 4 seasons he was a -19, -23 and last season he was a -15. I don't think his personality is what the HABS are trying to embrace culture wise. His Faceoff % is roughly 48.6%. I mean if Kent is only going to give up say our 1st round pick this season which is what 28th and say another a B prospect or Texier or Bolduc it might be worth it, other wise pass, we need someone IMO that has a lot more upside to him.
The Habs don't need Mr. Bad Attitude Larkin, thank you!
McTavish (a Left shot) is not a 'must have' 2C , especially if it means giving up a future star player in Kapanen (a Right shot). The Montreal Canadiens already has a shortage of Right shot forwards. The Canadiens do have a few AHL forwards that are NHL ready but no place to use them that might be a better asset to trade. As for that defensive RD , Hughes can simply hold off until the Free Agent window opens to go acquire a more seasoned player.
Good show there guys. Go HABs.
In a hypothetical trade for McTavish, I can't imagine Anaheim having any interest in Engstrom because they already have three good young RFA defenseman in Mintyukov and Zellwenger on the left side and Moore who shoots right. They all played a lot and well last season so I expect Anaheim will sign each of them to $1.5 to $4.5 million dollar contracts for three to six years.
Free agency can solve many problems by signing these 3 UFAs without losing any of our main assets…
Habs need to find a way to sign Anthony Mantha, AJ Greer, and Jacob Trouba and we've just added size, physicality, scoring, and grit.
Hage and Zharovsky will both be in Montreal at the end of next season and available for the playoffs.
Awwww, did Yanker players get their feelings hurt. So sad.
Reinbacher,he's not the next Larry Robinson
I enjoy the show but I disagree wholeheartedly with D'Amico's contract estimates for Gauthier and Leo Carlsson. I don't think either will get as much as 9 million per year. Verbeek is known to be very thrifty with Anaheim's money. My guess is $7.5 – $8.5m for five to seven years for each.
McDavid wants to play in Canada and win a cup and has only one year left to his contract + habs Will have cap space. (ik its fun to dream) Suzy on line 2!
If Nico Hischier is a player that would without a doubt push the Habs into bonafide contention and is able to physically handle the playoff grind then Montreal should go out and get him. Pay the price and build around proven pieces. Nothing is free in the NHL but once he’s signed that’s another key player requirement out of the way. Montreal wasted Carey Price’s career by not going after the big players and nibbling at the edges. Time to cash in on the potential on the team right now. It’s been 33 years. Time to hit the GO button.
One thing about this management team is they think outside the box and that is a good thing, so even though a trade for a higher end center may look sexier on paper, the actual need may well be someone that fits for the short term and by that meaning if the Habs brass truly believes that Hage will be " that guy " long term.
I'd like to hear of other options rather than the names being thrown out there because there is someone that none of us are thinking about and that could be the target
Can't wait to see Florian Xhekaj in the lineup. Wish he played last year. He going to be a beast!!
Mctavish would be a nice project for msl 😊
stop gap. kadri.
It says it came out 5 hours ago on youtube. But i listened to it full over 12+ hours ago on spotify.
No Dach the 2nd with build-in problem. Let's be patient and stick to the plan.
I heard Craig Button go off on Dylan Strome the other night and he sounds like he could fit in nicely. What do you think?
He is a pure 2C?
Oh ya Strome is south of 5 million for 2 more years, I believe.
OK. Here it is, Strome and a 2nd round pick 2027, for one of the 2 defensive studs in Laval and Kapanen/ or Zarofsky.
it just sucks how whenever a massive player like eichel is traded habs can never be an option.
I've come to your point of view about the cost of acquiring a long term solution at centre, Marco. It is likely to be excessive and, consequently, I would not mortgage the future to do so.
I don’t think he fits MSLs system anyways…
What about Dylan Strome in WSH? Aren’t the Caps looking at giving increasing ice time to the Protas brothers?!?
12m on nico would be the best case scenario. You have to pay for some guys, it's not realistic to assume the entire team will sign team friendly deals.
Mctavish I'm not sold on, but willing to try.
I am surprised Kotkaniemi's name has never come up as a potential 2C. He is a bonified Stanley Cup champion now.
That’s why they’ll end up with a winger. There are better options at that position.
I'll be honest, I never saw a full match of Mctavish but is it me but the kid look sloppy af even in his highlights ?!?
I don't know, I'm not sure if I'd like him in our jersey.
A Mason mactavish acquisition makes no sense to me. He sounds like he can turn into an expensive liability.
Just to be clear…wasn't McTavish a healthy scratch most of the second half of the season?
I'd do Kap and Reinbacher for McTavish
5:07 Just to flesh out what Marco is saying here, from VoteHub, Jan. 2026, about the political affiliations of American NHL players:
"107 players were sampled out of approximately 345 voting-eligible players, with 47 Republicans [43.9%], 6 Democrats [5.6%], 50 independents [48.6%] and 4 belonging to some other party."
Most independents in general do lean towards one party or the other–in recent years, there has been somewhat more independents leaning towards the Democrats than the Republicans (according to Gemini, FWIW).
Anyway, it's a good guess that a significant majority of American NHL players favour the Republicans. Doesn't necessarily mean they favour the current president, of course, but it's hardly surprising if most do.
About the data:
". . . using publicly available voter file data from 24 states and Washington, DC. Players are matched to voter records via public biographical information."
Btw, yes, I'm a stats nerd & don't particularly have a life. Thought I would say that before anyone else does. 😁
Zegras had 62 points was an even but he is 25 he is not getting any better and he needs top ice time to get that 62 points he is a VERY avg player.Mctavish is the same he is imo over rated he wouldn't do much at all for MTL.
It is one thing to say there is a hole in the lineup a 2C or RD but what exactly do people THINK would change from a TEAM standpoint adding one of these guys?
IMO McTavish would not help MTL gain a single point next year MTL is going to be VERY hard pressed to match this years totals.
