The Washington Capitals have a decision to make. Brendan Gallagher appears headed out of Montreal, and the Canadiens may be willing to retain salary to make a trade happen. Should the Caps get involved?
In this episode of Locked On Capitals, we break down Gallagher’s current value, why Montreal is moving on, Washington’s history of successful reclamation projects, and whether Gallagher could help bridge the gap between the Alex Ovechkin era and the next generation of Capitals hockey.
We examine the trade cost, salary cap implications, roster fit, leadership value, and whether this move would actually help Washington become a more complete playoff team heading into the 2026-27 season.

Hi Dan! Interesting podcast today…seems like BMac and CPat are Warren Buffet like guys, value investing, undervalued stocks! I think that model has been more successful than not for the Caps. But sometimes it has gotten BMac into trouble, where he has to move to get out from a bad contract (see Mantha, ). Totally agree, the Caps need to acquire players who are of good character and will fit in the Caps locker room and culture, have a good influence on the young guys with mentorship. Like Orpik, being an influence on Kuzy. Yet, I also see the need for CPat to use some of that trade assets and the hoarding of prospects and picks to also strike when the iron is hot for a big catch—be it Robertson or Larkin.
No
No Dan, he’s a bottom line guy. We need big names. The more this team adds grit aka mid the worse it will be.
