He’s Shane Wright, good at everything but not elite at anything — I don’t see him being more than a 2C. If you’re picking a C in the top 5, he needs elite traits
Beniers had elite defense, forechecking, transition play, and hockey IQ
Catton had elite skating, transition, IQ, and playmaking
O’Brien had elite playmaking and hockey IQ
They all had as good effort levels as Malhotra, which seems to be his best trait
Malhotra has just really good everything. He doesn’t have that ceiling you want from a top C draft pick. Does he have a ton of weaknesses? No, but the high-end ceiling isn’t there
Compare him to someone like Bjorck, who has elite hockey IQ, better playmaking, better board battling (like shockingly good despite his size), and effort levels that are off the charts
I just don’t see Malhotra being any different than what we currently have with Shane Wright — very good, but not elite
That’s my read on him, and I’m sure there’s a lot of people that disagree. I just don’t see it with him though
