REPORT: The Cleveland Cavaliers are prioritizing Dean Wade over Keon Ellis in free agency

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a handful of players reaching free agency this summer. The Cavs are also looking to come in under the second apron, after finishing last season as a second-apron team.

Cleveland’s first priority is working out a new deal with James Harden. After taking care of Harden, Cavaliers GM Koby Altman is expected to prioritize re-signing forward Dean Wade. Cleveland has developed Wade from an undrafted player to a core rotation player.

The Cavs may not be able to re-sign both Wade and free agent guard Keon Ellis this offseason. Given Cleveland has more need for depth in their frontcourt, along with wanting to avoid the second apron, that could lead to Ellis being allowed to leave the team in free agency. | https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/285957/Cavaliers-To-Prioritize-Re-Signing-Dean-Wade-Over-Keon-Ellis

  1. The hunter trade was pointless in the end. For every good shroeder stint there were 4 bad ones and ellis didnt even crack the playoff rotation. Hunter pissed me off this year maybe if we didnt not offer his best friend a contract hed have been better but at the very least he had some size which we lacked without him.

Honestly we should've just kept levert and niang and never made the trade for hunter to begin with. It was completely useless in retrospect

  2. Without dean wade , the calvs lose to toronto and detroit. What he did to brando ingram , was unbelievable. Same for when they played Detroit whoever he covered.
I'm thinking in the off season wade could come up with a go to shot. Floater? Midrange jumper? Hook shot?
Also, Hardens stats were horrible in the playoffs. What makes anyone think he will be better in next year's playoffs? Without Harden, you keep all those guys plus you have schroeder and proctor as the point guards , and you add tons of quickness to the roster by Having ellis, Proctor and schroeder.

  3. Prioritize Dean if it is a team friendly deal. 6'9, 6'10 dudes that can guard 1-5 aint out here growing on trees. Dean made Brandon Ingram quit mid series, wore down Cunningham and New York did everything possible to get him off Brunson every possession. Speaks for itself.

  4. They need to use that 1st pick on a wing 🤷🏾‍♂️ that can either shoot or play great defense. Not gonna get both at 29

  5. Mikey overrating every player that Cavs acquires. It was De’andre Hunter. He will be great 3 and D guy, then it was Ellis. A great defender and will hit an open 3. Stop it McNuggets. 😂

  6. If I could keep four rather than just 3 that four would be Ellis, Schroder, Strus and Merrill! If I MUST keep 3, it would be Ellis, Strus & Schroder! Tyson should be the Cavs starting #3. He’s aggressive on both ends of the court and he can handle the ball. If the Cavs had played those 3 player against the Knicks, they along with Tyson could have rotated on Brunson and wore him out! Wade is a big turd!! Y’all like his size but he might as well be 5’8’ because he’s not offensively aggressive enough! Additionally, his defense is overrated! He has no heart!! It’s like 5 on 4 when he is playing. He disappears on the offensive side of the court too much. And other teams know that and exploits that weakness!

Tyson, Bryant, Tomlin & Porter are all good enough to help the Cavs win in the playoffs, but Atkinson and his staff is their biggest problem! Those men have what it takes to push the Cavs over the top, if they can get on the court. The Cavs should have turned the table on the Knicks and the Pistons by expanding their rotation and employed a full court press with the depth of their roster. Moreover, the Cavs should have rotated Allen, Bryant, & Mobley at the center and power forward positions. Wade is too timid offensively to threaten centers. He allows the opponent centers/forwards to rest on the defensive side of the court.

Finally, the Cavs need to hire someone who can teach the coaching staff how to coach in-bound plays and how to defeat a full court press! Hint: A college or high school woman coach can teach them how to employ a series of effective out of bound plays. A high school coach can teach them how to beat a full court press! Long passes and picks! The Cavs coaching staff has been horrible! These simple concepts have escaped this staff and that’s a shame! And someone needs to tell Atkinson that taking “time outs” home is a sin!

  7. – Donovan Mitchell and Sam Merrill for KD & Reed Sheppard saves an additional 4.2 million
    – Evan Mobley and Dennis Schroder for Giannis Antetokounmpo saves an additional 6.4 million
    – Max Strus for Jalen Smith saves 7.2 million
    – Paired with James Hardens discount rumors at an additional 12-15 million that’s 29.8 – 32.8 million dollars in savings
    – Under A2 and the ability to do s&t
    – Throw 25-30 million to Peyton Watson to lure him away from DEN in a s&t for Wade Keon & CPJ

    Harden – Watson – KD – Giannis – Allen

    Reed – Proctor – Tyson – Tomlin – Smith

  8. I agree, have to keep Strus. I would keep Schroder too. Jay is right do not trade for Giannis. Bad move.IDK about Wade either.
