LARKIN TRADE REQUEST FALLOUT: YZERMAN’S LEVERAGE & TRADE RUMORS – Winged Wheel Podcast – June 7, ’26

This devastated Detroit Red Wings podcast tackles the Dylan Larkin trade request fallout & what comes next for Steve Yzerman. Hockeytown news & analysis breaks down the captain wanting out, Red Wings trade partners as rumors ramp up, & the path forward for an Original 6 franchise in chaos.

(00:00) – Intro
Recording back in studio after the emergency episode dropped mid-golf trip, with a shoutout to Ken Daniels for hosting the remote setup.

(06:00) – Larkin Trade Request Reactions, Hughes and Eichel Comparables & Original Six Captain Standards
The initial gut punch and how the past 48 hours have shifted the conversation around Detroit’s captain. Why the request is understandable from a human standpoint but to some, inexcusable for the captain of this franchise with five years still left on the deal. Plus, how Quinn Hughes and Jack Eichel trades set the floor for return value, and why Larkin’s contract makes him uniquely valuable. Also, why this shouldn’t happen to the Red Wings, and where the blame falls on the organization for letting it get here.

(24:50) – Trade Return Expectations & Yzerman’s Path Forward
What a fair package looks like and why Steve Yzerman holds more leverage than people think. And, the two roads ahead, the Alex DeBrincat extension question, and what to do with Patrick Kane.

(48:45) – Lucas Raymond at Center?
The Logan Stankoven comparison and whether Detroit has to experiment given the lack of a top six pivot.

(52:15) – Potential Trade Destinations
Utah, Dallas, Montreal, Buffalo, Anaheim, New Jersey, and more breakdowns including names like Hischier, Desnoyers, Iginla, Robertson, Bourque, Hage, and Owen Power.

(1:06:35) – Stanley Cup Final
Mitch Marner’s natural hat trick, Vegas grabbing a 2-1 series lead over Carolina, and Frederik Andersen’s struggles.

(1:11:55) – Overtime Mailbag
Your questions on three-team deals, training camp scenarios, and the floor of a Seider-Raymond core.

  1. I don't love the situation either, but the emotional response to Dylan is getting overboard. Let's take him out of the equation and say any other 2C who is playing 1C is there, and we are just now adding better Defensive and goalie help without addressing another top 6 winger or 1C, the results were likely going to be the same. If this was any other GM not named Stevie Y, he'd have been fired last season at the latest.

And I'm not saying adding that 1C or another top 6 winger is easy…but it's the job! I also say all this when Stevie Y is the reason I started watching the wings as a kid, I have his jersey, I used that number playing hockey… he needs to go or bring in a better GM who can utilize/manage assets way better than he has.

  2. If this situation is resolved by Yzerman getting fired and Larkin then retracting his request to be traded, I would be more than happy to see him skate on opening night.

  3. The only issue I have with Yzerman is he didn’t trade Larkin earlier back in 2019 or 2020. He should have really went for the full tank. I also kind of blame him for Cat. Those guys pushed the Wings to the mushy middle quicker than what they should have been. The mushy middle is death.

  4. If Yzerman were canned in April, this wouldn't be happening. And now were about to allow him to begin a 3-5 year retool? Im starting to think Yzerman should be fired this week to save the embers of this franchise.

  5. Larkin is a TRAITOR! Even if the team sucks, if you are a lifelong Red Wings fan, to be on the Red Wings. Does it really matter if you never win a cup on the team!? I would take the money (which is a lot) and play my hardest for the team I loved my entire life. Captain…pshhhh…I better see everyone's Larkin jerseys on the ice in October. Put him in the press box for the next 4 years and trade him for nothing at the deadline of 2030-31 season. Brad is so right, he is "SOFT"! Never was a true Red Wing! Respect is earned, he earned the disrespect. Bring back Darren Helm!

  6. For a future episode could you discuss a Larkin trade return as if a 30 year old, injury prone, 1-2C who has requested a trade with a full NMC isn't an extremely valuable trade chip, and where people with trade protection wont waive it to go to Detroit. Just as a fun, completely hypothetical exercise. 🙂

  7. man, you guys seem harder on Larkin than you've been on Yzerman. If Larkin stays his entire career and never has success, fans will complain about how bad of a captain he was. You complain about soft he is, but are bitter he wants to leave. Yzerman has drafted "let's hope they pan out" players. He's signed guys like Pius Suter and Mason Appleton. He's signed more goalies than we can even name. Meanwhile, he drafted Cossa in the first round only to let him stay in the minors and float his name out there for trades. SY has lost control of the "rebuild", fans know this, but do not want to criticize SY because he's a local god.

  8. Nice to hear you guys finally calling out Larkin for being soft. I’ve never been the biggest Larkin fan but I knew for sure he wasn’t the man to lead this team the moment he was crying about the trade deadline. You could tell in post game interviews whenever this team has been struggling that he was a defeated man who couldn’t handle the pressure when it mattered. The guy has no fire. I’ve never seen him angry about losing, I’ve only seen him be a mopey bitch after losses.

  9. This historic organization is in the state that it's in mainly because the league screwed it many times in the "draft lottery". After 25 straight years of making the playoffs and 4 more cups they wanted Detroit to suck for at least a decade

  10. Dylan Larkin is soft. He has no heart. Never has. He was never going to be Steve Yzerman like people hoped. He checks out in March and blames management never looks at himself. Steve Yzerman whether you young folks like to admit it or not or acknowledge it, or even understand it is doing what's best for the franchise for the future of the team. You don't bet your future and your cap space on rentals at a trade deadline when you know the history of the team and the potential for collapse. You don't bet the farm and do bad contracts. That's a Kenny Holland thing. Can anyone imagine the wings win in any cups? Had Yzerman checked out and said I want to be traded. Like you're talking about fans being embarrassed and the wings being the laughingstock they're not. It's Larkin that people are looking at sideways other than people that don't know any better. Zetterberg, Lidstrom had to endure Babcock and neither fucking quit on the team on the organization! The wings were a lot worse when eiserman was drafted. They were called the dead things for a reason they had to give away cars in order to get fans in the seats. A captain has to have heart. A captain has to lay it all on the line. Dive to block shots hit and they don't ask to be traded and make it public. So what missteps? You guys put the onus on Yzerman yet you don't know the details of potential trades. Contract negotiations you make assumptions something to talk about I get it. But today's Wings fans want iserman to give everything up just to make the playoffs and until you have a contender that needs one or two pieces, a team that's already making the playoffs. Sorry you don't go all in on the team. Larkin had four points in March. Yeah he was injured and he only played seven games. Debricat had 15 pts, Kane had 12 or something Raymond had 10 or 11 and most of those points were when Larkin was injured. The wings weren't rolling in March but when Larkin came back it's like the team started playing with the emergency brake on. Debrincat had what 84 points? Larkin had 64? Kane had 57, Raymond 76 pts. Seider 60 pts, if the captain isn't putting up the points the people getting paid less than him, are he sure as hell better be the glue that holds the team together to lead to have heart?
