San Jose Sharks face a pivotal decision: Should they target Morgan Rielly or Darnell Nurse to bolster their blue line? Both defensemen come with hefty contracts and unique strengths—Rielly excels at driving offense with the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Nurse brings size and a shutdown presence from the Edmonton Oilers. Which veteran is the smarter cap move for a rebuilding San Jose squad?
JD Young breaks down each player’s skill set, contract implications, and how they might fit into the Sharks’ lineup. Key topics include potential trade packages comparable to the Jacob Trouba deal, the importance of offensive blue line play, and why finding the right partner could maximize Rielly’s impact. Hear why Rielly’s puck-moving ability might be rarer and more valuable than Nurse’s defensive approach as San Jose charts its course this offseason.

No, No, NoNoNo
NO THE SHARKS DONT NEED OTHER TEAMS TRASH
Neither. The Sharks have enough cap space for two more seasons, but after that they need space to start paying all the players coming off their ELC's. And both players are bad. Plus they are both LHD. On the left side the Sharks have Orlov, Mukh, Dickinson, and Cagnoni. Who would you bench in order to play Nurse or Rielly? There are so many better veterans the Sharks should try and acquire instead: Carlson, Murphy, Kesselring, Hronek, Burns, Trouba, Raddysh,, Andersson, Hamilton…
Neither
Can't play 4 rookie defensman? Pohlkamp and Cags are the only true rookies.
Dickinson is a left as is Muk and Cags.
Orlov can play right and they need to sign Desharnais who is a right and Pohlkamp is a right. There's your 6. Bring in LSW to swap in development with Cags or likewise and resign Leddy as an 8th that will spend pretty much the whole season in the press box but you have him as a "break glass in case of emergency" defensman.
Neither one, and it has nothing to do with the money. I can put up with watching the Sharks lose knowing they are exciting and building. But please do not make me watch either of these two. If that's the case then why get rid of Klingberg and Leddy.
Nope we are a young gun team. No need for any old guys. Klinberg should of been gone regardless too
Kill two birds with one stone: trade pick 2 to Chicago for pick 4 & Sam Rinzel, then draft Verhoeff at 4. Verhoeff has a true higher ceiling than Reid and more of a playoff type of game….we should be trying to emulate Vegas and Carolina style of blue line instead of looking for a PP QB type of Dman
Reilly needs good defensive partner beside him .
what is happening?🤨
Idea: get picks to take on Nurse, let him play slightly better for 1 year, and trade him to someone else.
What I hear the most from Oilers fans “We need to dump Nurse’s contract” they hate how much he costs and call him a liability. I hope we’re past the phase of having liabilities on the team. If Grier trades for Nurse, it means he’s fine with the Sharks being a lottery team next year. I hope he doesn’t make that mistake because we trust him. The only way I would be fine with Reilly is if it’s a 2 year contract. If it’s more than that, I don’t want it. Even 1 year is too much. But he’ll want more than 2 years. We’ve made that mistake with Sherwood already giving him 5 years, that can’t happen again. We’re not feeling the Sherwood contract now because he’s still playing well but in 3 or 4 years, we’ll feel the weight of this contract. So that can’t happen again with another player. The young players are the only ones that should be getting more than 2 years, the vets should be getting 2 years so the team can evaluate how they fit the team
If you're trading for Nurse or Rielly, it should be either their teams are picking up a ton of salary and you're giving up basically nothing or they're giving up some major assets to take the contracts off their books.
Nurse and Rielly are SIGNIFICANTLY NEGATIVE value contracts, so their teams need to be giving up stuff to offload those contracts.
Unless Grier is pulling off another Walman-like trade, there's no way I'm touching either player with a ten-foot pole. And even then, I still might not want either player.
A 28yo Walman when he was traded had 2 years @ $3.4M left on his contract.
Nurse is 31 with 4 years @ $9.25M left on his contract.
Rielly is 32 with 4 years @ $7.5M left on his contract.
Actually, looking at the numbers, I take back what I said. I want SIGNIFICANTLY better than the Walman trade to take on either player. (i.e., at least a 1st to take on either contract completely). Considering that the Sharks have to pay their young studs soon, those are pretty significant hits on their cap space and will actually hinder the Sharks in trying to build a Cup contender.
Both Nurse AND Rielly have slowed down significantly and if you're going to make a 4+ year commitment, I'd rather just re-sign Ferraro for less money.
Doubt the change of scenery does much for Rielly, he still looked bad at the World Championship and was arguably Canada's worst D. He is on his last legs with a lot of wear and tear on his body and has already fallen off the cliff, HARD pass. The team needs D that can actually defend, Rielly is one of the worst defenders in the NHL. You are basically adding Klingberg but instead of only a 1 year contract you are stuck with Rielly for 4 years at a much higher cap hit.
if you are looking at these two why wouldn't you offer Darren Radysh 8 million for 5 years.
Oh god no
Why even give this nonsense any attention?
Ferraro out.
Nurse in.
I don't think Grier is that stupid. There would have to be a major asset as well. Nurse + 1st rounder for nothing, but I don't think that's happening. Those 4 years are 2 too much. I think Vancouver or Calgary would be a better fit if they want to get rid of his contract.
Nurse's weakness is that he has no strengths.
If the Oilers are willing to part with another 1st round pick, Nurse could be an option
I don't want Nurse, especially not paying for him, not even future consideration, and even some late pick I'd be not that happy. Reilly at least has some upside but I'm still very meh but could be talked into it for extremely cheap, or cap dumb + picks. Best case scenario, we get neither and sign someone like Trouba
None of the above
