The Stanley Cup Final between the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights begins tonight, and with the 2025-26 NHL season nearing an end, we’re entering full offseason mode, which means the rumor mill is heating up! There are varying reports of the Philadelphia Flyers’ interest in pending free agent defenseman John Carlson, as well as the Anaheim Ducks’ Mason McTavis who, like Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale, appears to be falling out of favor with Pat Verbeek & Co.

Matthews would be an awful add. Yes hes a great player and yes there is risk but we are talking about adding a guy whos turning 29 years old this year. It is such a shortsighted move because you are paying assets for what just a few more peak years of Matthews at best? Flyers need a #1C that is close in age to our Core. This is exactly the type of move the Flyers of old would make. Adding Matthews negates the entire rebuild. You are adding a guy to get such a small window to win and then go right back to a rebuild again because you have no #1C again and by that time you need a Sanheim replacement too,
The biggest issue is the Flyers have no answer to the #1C and D spots for the future. Guys like Matthews and Carlson are just short term options. Flyers should have been tanking for another year or two. Keaton Verhoeff has a top pair potential. Thats way more valuable to me than getting outclassed by a real contender in the playoffs. In a normal year where the Metro isnt garbage, the Flyers arent a playoff team. Fact is everyone outside of CAR sucked.
TLDR version: Take 1st overall pick. Matthews is too old.

Mactavish trade if it makes sense and Carlson on a one year deal. Valdr 5year extension scares me I'd need to see more before I do that. And any capable backup not named Ersson.

Idk I’m still wary on the Carlson idea. I might just have bad experience of the Flyers signing 35+ year olds. And I’m not super sure I’m sold on the whole mentor thing either because it’s not going to automatically make guys like Jiricek and Bonk better. Look at Niskanen. Dude was a great mentor and both Provorov and Sanheim regressed after he left, with Sanheim eventually reaching his potential way later on.
It makes me very happy to know that the Ducks will be gatekept by the Sharks for the next decade and won't win a damn thing.
I'd like to know more about Matthews and how he interacts with teammates. Seems to me that Toronto was a bit of a mess with selfish stars who didn't get along with teammates or have any desire to build team chemistry. Was Matthews a victim or part of the problem?
