The Chicago Blackhawks avoided disaster with the Jack Pridham situation.
Just hours before the deadline, the Blackhawks traded Pridham’s rights to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick. That means Chicago turned a situation where they were at risk of losing him for nothing into actual draft capital.
And honestly, that matters.
Pridham was originally drafted by the Blackhawks in the third round, 92nd overall, in the 2024 NHL Draft. He had until June 1 to either sign an entry-level contract with Chicago or commit to a college program. If neither happened, he would have re-entered the 2026 NHL Draft and the Blackhawks would have lost his rights completely.
Instead, Kyle Davidson found a way to get something back.
Pridham is now heading the college route, with his NCAA program expected to be announced soon. By committing to college, his rights remain active for the team that holds them. That team is now Tampa Bay.
The timing makes this even more interesting.
Pridham is leaving the Blackhawks organization after an incredible season. He scored 46 goals and 44 assists for 90 points in 65 OHL games with the Kitchener Rangers, finishing second in the league in goals. He also won the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy as the OHL’s Overage Player of the Year.
Then he helped Kitchener win its first OHL title since 2008, added 15 assists in 18 playoff games, and finished as one of the top performers at the Memorial Cup, where the Rangers won the championship.
So yes, this one stings a little.
The Blackhawks just moved the rights to one of junior hockey’s most productive goal scorers and a Memorial Cup champion.
But when you look at the situation honestly, Davidson had limited options. He could try to convince Pridham to sign, which clearly was not happening. He could let him walk back into the draft for nothing. Or he could trade the rights before the deadline and recover value.
He chose option three.
And getting a 2027 third-round pick is a solid outcome.
It is basically the same type of pick Chicago used to draft Pridham in the first place, which makes the trade feel close to a wash in terms of asset value. The Blackhawks also now have 10 picks in the 2027 NHL Draft, including two third-rounders, giving them even more flexibility for future trades or more swings at the draft board.
The bigger-picture takeaway is complicated.
This trade probably only happens because the Blackhawks prospect pool is so deep. Chicago has so many young forwards in the system that a player like Pridham may have looked at the depth chart and decided his path to the NHL was clearer somewhere else.
That is both good and frustrating.
It means the rebuild is working. The Blackhawks have real prospect depth. But it also means some good players are going to leave and potentially succeed elsewhere.
Pridham might become one of those players.
Tampa Bay clearly saw value. They moved quickly, acquired his rights, and now have a productive goal scorer in their system without needing to draft him again.
So was this a good move by Kyle Davidson?
Given the circumstances, yes.
Was it still painful to lose a 46-goal scorer coming off a Memorial Cup championship?
Also yes.
Now the question becomes whether Pridham turns into a real NHL player for the Lightning, and whether this eventually becomes one of those “one that got away” stories for the Blackhawks.

Fine but we should’ve got a 2nd and a 7th
Who cares, he would of been on the long list of bottom six forwards they already have in the system
He was ranked 13 or 14 of the Hawks top prospects. He was an over ager, 20, playing against teenagers on a championship team. He'll be a good middle 6 player. Good luck to him in Tampa.
