WARNING SIGNS: Islanders Season at RISK Without Reliable Backups for Ilya Sorokin & Semyon Varlamov

The New York Islanders face a goaltending crisis as Ilya Sorokin’s workload and Semyon Varlamov’s injury history raise tough questions—with the NHL schedule expanding to 84 games, can the Islanders afford to gamble in net? Gil Martin examines the limited backup options, including a potential return for David Rittich and the challenge of finding an affordable, reliable third goalie amidst cap space headaches.

Key segments include the re-signing of AHL veteran Liam Foudy and what his presence means for the Hamilton Hammers’ locker room, plus an assessment of Alexander Romanov’s disappointing, injury-shortened season and his future role on defense. Gil highlights front office moves under Mathieu Darche, cap constraints inherited from Lou Lamoriello, and spotlights Islanders birthday of the day, Richard Park—one of the NHL’s rare South Korean-born players. Can the Islanders’ depth withstand another grueling campaign or will goaltending woes derail playoff hopes?

  1. -nice! re-sign another useless ahl-nhl-tweener who adds nothing but 3 g's and speed. now re-sign broken down 40 for two more years. back up goalie solved. or just sign another old useless bum to back-up 30.
-i just wonder what ilya could do on a team that actually had talent like avs or oil? what a waste of a talent.
-meanwhile avs are swept away. no cup for brock. say bye bye bednar who should have multiple cups by now.

  2. The management of the NY Islanders need to have realistic goals for the 26-27 season. For example, if Darche were to say that his mission for the upcoming season is to continue to develop the younger players, Schaefer, Eklund, Ritchie, Eiserman and to build a new core to this hockey team it would go a long way to generating respect and confidence amongst the fanbase. If however he continues to spout the absolute garbage that this team is a playoff contender and that he will make changes to the roster only if it advances that goal, then 2026/27 will be another exercise in futility just like 2025/26.

  3. Islanders no chance to win because of cost along with play of Sorokin Vaarly. Why did Avalanche get swept with lumber yard goalie blackwood making like 5.5M per year. Well imagine if team had another LHD as only had marginal two Kulak Toews. Would they have got swept as Midge Makar was unable to play start even blatant cross check not called or Hart making like 2M or 4M for 2 years wins easily. Metric is 6'4 goalies going up to 6'6 with reach torso leg size. Even in weak metro with 10 save Freddy. Sorokin is crap not clutch as used to win often on DraftKings before banned me for winning starting goalies against Islanders. Shed any goalies making more than 1 to 3M or never win a round. Arbour 123 Wins safe fro DeBoer 97 hehe.

  4. The islanders should not be Signing any player over the Age of 25-26 years old enough with the alumni team 2 of the Most important things for the team is Beef up the Defense a fighter to protect our players and a Backup to Sorokin Start there that’s our foundation build up from this point thank you Gil 👍🏼🧡LGI 💙

  5. The 26/27 season is a bridge year. There will be a goalie who will sign a 2 way deal it just might not be Dave. It is just a bridge season. Darche cannot repeat trying to add any veterans this upcoming season. Getting rid of older players is a must keeping bigger eyes on 27/28. Sorokin and Gamzin is the future in the net and a 50/50 split to keep the tenders fresh is optimal. Islanders can trade Schen and Palms just to name 2 at the deadline to add more picks where we could even get a first round pick that was lost back in a deal. Unless Pelech or Romy are playing 3 rd line D one or both could be traded. Pelech is the most likely trade option at or before the draft. Yet if Darche wants to get out of the Romy contract he has until June 30 th 2027 before his NTC kicks in. If Aitcheson proves he can fit in mid season or last 25 games Romy could be gone if Aitcheson will play the left side. In a perfect world 🌎 Pelech gets traded as his value will never be higher on an aging asset. With the Sharks having 4 UFA D men none of which I see returning might be a landing spot for Pelech. I don’t think Pelech would land Eklund but just maybe if Sharks take Ivar then perhaps Eklund could become available but at what cost? I could see a deal where Pelech goes to the Sharks for the 20 th pick and Musty which would be an extremely good deal. If Shabby’s rights had to be included then so be it. We have a month or so to go. Expect rumors and possible deals to ramp up. I do feel Darche will make some deals and add draft picks 🙏! Go Islanders

  6. What’s going to end up happening is Sorokin’s talent is going to be wasted while the rest of the team tries to get its act together for 2-3 years and then everyone will realize what a mistake it was keeping him. At this moment, he’s the most valuable bargaining chip the Isles have had in a long time.

  7. Here is a trade idea. I think edm is a good trading partner

Pelech, cz and duclair for Jarry, freseric and prospect.

This helps both teams edm gets better defensively and isles get a goalie and a younger bugger forward. Duclair can reset on a different team and be productive on the oilers

  8. Good afternoon, Gil. How are you? The Islanders have a proven backup in Varlamov, but he has a bad back and may call it quits. The Islanders should keep David Rittich, who was just fine until after the Olympic break. The Islanders resigned Liam Fouty to a one year two way contract. Alexander Romanov gets an Incomplete because he got hurt, and it cost him the rest of the season. Hear from you later, Gil, but before I go, I compared 20 year old rookie Mike Bossy to young Michael Corleone from The Godfather. Michael was a soft spoken cold blooded assassin. He wasn't a fighter, but he was calculating. I also compared him to Tate Dutton John Dutton's grandson from Yellowstone. While young Tate learned the land and the 🐴 when he was 5 years, Boss learned how to put the 🏒 in the net when he was 5 years old. Tate also learned how to protect himself. First be killing a rattlesnake, then he shot and killed a henchman who was going to kill his mother. Now, LET'S GO ISLANDERS 🏒🔵🟠😊
