The Dallas Stars traded a 2026 3rd round draft pick at the deadline to acquire forward Michael Bunting from the Nashville Predators. Bunting played in 13 regular season games for the Stars, scoring one goal and adding one assist, while averaging 12:48 of ice time. He suffered a groin injury late in the season and only appeared in one playoff game (Game 6 at Minnesota). He’s a pending UFA with a cap hit of $4.5M on his expiring contract. Bunting would be an expensive block on any AHL talent that's showing they deserve a crack at the big show.
I think we've done too good a job of finding college free agents to fill out the cupboard with the current lack of picks. I wouldn't give up on letting the next Ritzy blossom in the bottom 6, just to bring back Bunting.
Why is this even a question? Bunting was an absolute waste of space and added nothing to this team. Possibly the worst deadline trade of Jim Nill’s tenure as GM. No. He can walk.
You could do both deals (1year cheapish and big deal post Seguins 9.85 off the books) before the September 15th cut off date for 8 year deals, and keep Robo around for the next 9 years.
My crazy idea:
1. Trade Steel & a pick for Nick out of Toronto.
2. Use Nicks need of a new deal to leverage his Robro into signing a cheap 1 year deal thats immediately followed an 8 year deal. 1×8(last RFA deal) & 8×13(1st UFA deal) before September 15th, or 1×8 & let Robo walk to UFA chasing a 17×6 on the market, with a 13×7 on the table in Dallas.
3. Profit
I think the money for Bunting is better spent elsewhere.
You'd have to be completely Bedarded to even consider bringing Bunting back, much less weighing out what you'd be willing to give up.

totally agreed. Bunting didn't do anything to earn a spot here. He took some penalties though
Get Johnston out of the center position and put him on a wing… decide if you want duchene or hintz up there…. That’s the best play imo. Yes lock Robo down, fix this all next year
Bunting was the worst of the players that were traded-away from Nashville at the trade deadline.
