I hope not. He’s legitimately one of the best penalty killers in the league. I say resign him and let him fill that role. He’s not amazing 5 on 5. But he does well enough that he helps more than he hurts.
Trade up, take Stenberg/McKenna – then Florida needs trade deadline currency and the Hawks have plenty of that – so I think the 8th overall pick is likely in play for future picks and 8th overall is the perfect spot to land one of these top defenseman.. And I'd definitely make a trade offer for either Michkov or Pettersson – then on July 1st sign Kane – and this team is playoff bound next spring…

It’s the right decision to let him go. Roster spot is needed to improve the offensive output of the club.
Disagree with Greg’s take on the Hawks not caring about taking on massive contracts like Pettersson’s. Yes the cap is going up but that means the players we do have are going to be more expensive to sign. If Pettersson signing is a step towards being a playoff team, then we have to assume our prospects are working out. I feel like Lev, Rinzel, Frondell, Kantserov, Lardis, Moore are going to be solid contracts signing in the next 2-3 years. I would hate to be playing hardball with Kantserov because we have an anchor $11 mil with a fading Petey.
This will be a MAJOR loss. Good luck replacing him. And he's more than a PK specialist. Look at his goals over the last 2 years.
Get best player available
If the Hawks end up with a D man at 4th, they will get the best D in the draft. You take him with a smile and look to next season, where there are many forwards to choose from. I would rather have to move a d man because we have too many, than let the best d man in the draft go.
