  1. The only decision to be made, is do you rebuild from scratch the product the ice or hybrid-build like Montreal?! If the latter, you need more than just Matthews and Nylander plus a well-developed farm team with prospects coming up. Unfortunately the farm is not great.

  2. Leafs go all in, trade their first to Vancouver for the 3rd overall pick and Petersson at 2 million retained (or something like that, i don’t know exactly how the trade would look like), and draft an elite defencemen, stay competitive for 2 years until they own their first round pick, and then start their rebuild if Matthews and Willy don’t resign

  3. Leafs still dont seem to get it. Trading Matthews is the smartest move for them. They too worried about keeping him. He is gone in 2 years regardless. Why trade him next deadline when other teams will have all the leverage? Also that is a year and a half down the road meaning whatever draft picks or prospects you get will be a year and a half further down the road. You need to expedite this so whatever young players you end up with can develop on same timeline with McKenna. Trade Matthews now and pick a guy with a pick this year, next year or two years from now and that guy can develop into a new core with McKenna. Draft a guy 4 years from now because you waited 2 years to make the trade now that guy is a rookie when McKenna hitting prime. Doesn't make sense kicking can down the road. As far as Matthews trade value goes it could go up or down from here depending on bounce back and future injuries, it's also a gamble waiting to move on. Smartest thing to do now is trade Matthews for as many picks and prospects as they can get. Then move other guys like Nylander or whoever at trade deadline next year depending on how things are developing.

  4. See if you can move Matthews and Nylander. If you can't move Matthews at least rip the C. Get rid of Nylander any way you can. High skill, low effort guys ruin teams. Trade down in the draft and and stockpile young players.

  5. To Sharks: Matthews
To Leafs: Misa, Haltunnen, 2nd overall pick

To Kings: Nylander, 2027 2nd round pick
    To Leafs: Clarke, Laferriere, Edmundson

    To Edmonton: Rielly, Stolarz
To Leafs: Nurse, Savoie, Beau Akey

These are rough ideas I had of some potential trades

  6. you can draft without bottoming out You just acquire assets and trade those assets for picks,, the plan should be collect assets and try to get better for the next two years with Matthews if you don't get better and he doesn't stay then you have a lot of assets Plus your first round picks back,, then start drafting

  7. If youre a leafs fans you should be begging for trading nylander and Matthew's take it down to the studs and get picks and prospects .. then you might get to have a train like the habs where the guys love each other .. have a horrible core and wont win with it

  8. Ah poor babies, if Leafs end up losing and Boston and Philly end up picking in the top 10. Will your little egoes be hurt? There is very little in free agency and they have to compete with 31 other teams for players. They don't have much to trade. So the draft is pretty much the only place to find 2 top pairing defensemen and a 2nd line center who are patriots who will bleed blue and white. 1 or 2 years to find them (without high picks)? Good luck with that.

  9. The Leafs are « too big to fail ». They won’t take any kinda chance on a coach that has no NHL experience. They should get an outsider coach that would grow and learn with the team, but that’s not something MLE has any interest in doing, because there is too much (money) at stakes.

  10. The question Adam is proposing is so simple, he touches on it himself. I fully agree btw, it will take 2-3 years to build this team back into a cup contender. The ONLY answer to achieve that is trading Matthew Knies, maybe even to the Blackhawks. It's literally the ONLY way, if you can get Nestrasil/Florida 2027 1st and the 4th OA pick you gotta do it. In that deal alone you potentially get Chase Reid/A POTENTIAL PF replacement for Knies on that top line and a piece you can swing to fill another hole in your line up. Maybe offer 2 2027 1st's/McCabe and Robertson for Thomas Harley and Ilya Lybushkin, it's a competitive offer that frees nearly 10mill in cap for Dallas and you get a temp 1D until Chase Reid can step into that role.

It is so simple, I love Matthew Knies but you can reshape your d-core, get younger and build a bulletproof contender for the next decade. Pair with that solid drafting this year in the 2nd and 3rd rounds? What if Mathis Preston free falls into our laps, what if we take Lavr Gashilov in the 3rd round. so many possibilities and potential with this Leafs team but we gotta make the hard calls.

  11. I'd try really hard to pull Bourque and Harley out of Dallas if they're willing to move either one. Utah and Seattle might be other good teams to trade with for centres like Hayton or Wright and dmen like Dunn or Durzi. Auston is friends with Roslovic. Maybe we ask about him? As for free agency, maybe a guy like Tolvanen could be a good winger to add to go with Raddysh, Andersson or Ferraro, whomever is out there. They've got a lot of work to do.

  12. Win one?!

The HURRICANES are in for a REALITY CHECK.

The Hurricanes have had an easy go… The HABS are now Lightning Forged and soon to be Buffalo Proof…. And Montreal beat the Hurricanes all three times in the regular season.

Time will tell – but I don’t think the Hurricanes losing four in a row it out of the question. I say HABS in 5 for Conference finals.

They will be fast end-to-end games!

  13. If you trade Am34 you have to trade 88 aswell. Eat half Mathews salary hes at 6.6m aav thats great value for a 30g a year center with a strong 2 way game. Flip him to San Jose for Eklund, Bystedt, SJS 1st and EDO 26 1st for Mathews at 50% retained 27' Avs 1st Carlo 50% retained

  14. They should trade Knies for No. 2 and Dickinson, then trade No. 2 for No. 3 and Petterson. Then pick up Chase Reid with the No. 3 pick, McKenna with No. 1.

They should also see if they can trade Matthews to Utah for their picks. Nylander for Boldy and Minnie's picks. Reilly to get maybe a couple pylons… that would be better.

  15. Its five years after they start the rebuild. Probably wont start the rebuild for two years. So think seven years.
The Leafs might be a 15th-20th place team overall.
Montreal traded for Nick Suzuki in 2018 Cole Caufield 2019 Guhle Dobes 2020 Mailloux Kapanen 2021 Slafkovsky Hutson 2022 Reinbacher Fowler 2023 Demidov Hage 2024 Zharovsky 2025

  16. Leafs fans talking about trading Mathews and Nylander… Are not Leafs fans. Mathews can take a year before saying anything about his future. He said months ago that he wants to see what management does. It's obvious he didn't wanna play for Berube. Can he at least see who is new coach will be before committing to the biggest decision of his life THAT HE DOESN'T EVEN NEED TO MAKE FOR ANOTHER YEAR AT LEAST! Stupid fkn leaf fans and the click bait media. You just love to stir the pot of bs eh? you reap what you sow.

  17. It isn't what the "fans" want… is Matthews wanting to 'wait' for a youngster to develop at NHL level? What happens if 'youngster' takes a McDavid injury in first year, delaying progression by how many seasons? Is Matthews prepared to wait?

  18. Vancouver Canucks are open for business! You guys need a top D? Hronek is a beast on a great contract. You need a playmaker to feed Mathews? Pette is a beast as a set-up man. His contract sucks? We'll take Morgan Rylee whose contract is a 6 mill a year overpay. Cost? 1st overall pick that won't be elite for 3 years, after Mathews is gone. And 2029 1st which will be a mid pick you can top 10 protect.
