Auston Matthews is trash. Not a leader, not healthy for years now, and has lost how many times in the playoffs? No way I want him in New Jersey. Never. Also by giving up Nico Hischier we get worse defensively and lose a player that is willing to go into all areas of the ice to get a puck. I wouldn't do a one for one deal and so I sure as hell would not also give up Simon Nemec and a first round pick in your suggested deal.
They should definitely take this risk. Matthews is a top 5 center in the game, it’s a no brainer. You mentioned team culture if Nico is traded. Well this team absolutely needs its culture changed. Glass and Bujstad can step up and take more defensive draws, or Erik
Haula is a FA,he would make a decent 4C to kill penalties and take faceoffs. Sunny is not going to sit on his hands and hope things get better. I would expand the trade and go after Knies as well.

Matthews has been in for 10 season. While I wouldn't mind a high caliber player like him, I'm hesitant because the Devils have been burned by big acquisitions before….Kovy and Crawford.
Jack and Auston have both played less than 70 games for Jack the past 3 season and Auston the past 2 seasons. The devils need to focus on having 4 solid lines like Carolina and Colorado instead of focusing on one line.
Matthews is just a pure sniper. Mentally weak, doesn’t use his size at all. He is on the decline now considering his back and his knee.
The only way I would go for something like this is if it's a sign and trade deal and Jack gets the C. On the other hand, doing so would also give Quinn even more of a reason to want to come here.
