The Leafs have been laughable since 1967. Why would Matthews or any other Leaf want to remain with the Leafs?! They are a horrible franchise. Loathsome doesn't even begin to describe it. Besides Matthews is overrated and should not have been the captain. One of the worst captains.
He doesnt want to leave. He just didnt say it in the exact words that you guys want. He didnt leave the door open, the door is just simply open. None of us can predict the future, he is just being honest about it.
As much as i am not a matthews fan….a bit over rated as a leader but i dont blame him for what he said….he kinda gets trampled with toronto media….id want out if i was him and im a leaf fan
Just feels like he doesn’t want to be here anymore and I get it. The Toronto media towards players is like the extra cook in the kitchen. Almost nowhere else does the media kill the players than the Leafs. Look at all the stars who left and won a cup…Kessel, Kaberle, Kadri, Schenn, Steen, Bozak, Andreychuk, and soon it’ll be Hyman and Marner.
The Leafs should have dealt Matthew’s two seasons before Marner left. Should’ve never made him their captain either. He is NOT a leader. One trick pony at best.
Of course he didn’t say what you wanted him to. Any player or worker would look at the changes and situation and consider options that align with their career goals. If he wants a cup and doesn’t see it happening in Toronto with where they’re at, then it’s understandable. He’d also be ripped to shreds (Tavares and NY) if he said he wanted to stay all the way though the contract and then walked.
Here's the thing EVEN if auston did say I love it here. He'd still be like we'll see so there's nothing Matthews could have said that would have made Hayes happy. This dude just loves to bitch
Maybe in two years Austin wouldn’t be the player he once was. This past season wasn’t his only poor one. I have loved watching him play but I don’t think he has long term plans here in Toronto only he knows that and he’s obviously not telling anyone
You all know precisely why he didn’t say that. I don’t even know why we’re bothering to have this conversation because it’s so blatantly obvious. He either hasn’t made up his mind or he has made up his mind that he wants to leave and he doesn’t wanna make a public statement to that effect. You all are talking about the most obvious thing on the face of the Earth.
He had the opportunity to be a grown man leader and he didn’t. Shocker. He is still a child. He should go. He’s never accepted any responsibility for anything. His teammates watched him get run through by Gudas and all four of them skated away. Left him on the ground. And lied saying they didn’t see it.
