Honestly I think people are overthinking this. It’s not that Ottawa is clearly better than Montreal, it’s more about perception and matchups. Montreal might actually have better depth top to bottom, but if they have to go through a team like Tampa early, that scares people more than Ottawa potentially facing Carolina. Add in the Brady Tkachuk Olympic gold and the whole “built for playoffs” narrative, and it just tilts opinions. Feels like fans are leaning more on storylines and vibes than actually comparing the full rosters.
Writing off the Sens who have played playoff style hockey since the Olympic break is wrong. They are 23-8-5 since January 12th. Montreal are a good team for playing in the season but stats wise are one of the weaker teams for playoff hockey.

If you think MTL and OTT are closer then what people think Ottawa had more regulation wins MTL won more in overtime and shoot outs, 3 on 3 and shoot outs don't exist from now one. Ottawa made the playoffs with bad goaltending 29th or 30th, Tampa and Carolina are both favourite. Tampa has the best goalie in the EAST after Boston with Swayman. Should be fun and stressful series for every fan base!
The only reason that Ottawa could go further is bacause they'd get an easier path against Metropolitan division teams, Carolina being the only threat for them while The habs have Tampa and Buffalo on their bracket. It would be amazing playing 4 home games against Ottawa thou.
Sens have a much better defense, and we all know what wins championships. They also have much better depth. Stats show that Caufield has been shut down by Pinto too.

Sens have tons of gamebreakers too. Stutzle, batherson, tkachuk, cozens. Then Sanderson on one line and Chabot on 2nd both driving play.
